I bought 3 bundles from the same person, actually not via Ebay in the end (auctions ended, I forgot to bid, so bought privately via Paypal).

There were 3 bundles - 4-5 stuff, 5-6 stuff and 18-24m stuff. Some of the 5-6 stuff is '5 ans' in the tags. Doesn't this mean 4-5? When I measure it up against the actual 5-6 stuff, it's a good inch or so shorter. That's not the end of the world, as DS1 can wear it all now, but I didn't want this many pairs of trousers in the same size! Also some of the 4-5 stuff is 4 ans, so really 3-4 I think. It just fits DS1 now, but won't fit for long, so not much use. Also, the 18-24m stuff is a complete mixture of sizes from birth upwards. That's no use at all as DS2 is 19m already! I just tagged the bundle on as it wouldn't increase the postage much, and I can hardly use any of it!

I think (she's an ebay newbie) that she's picked the wrong category for the clothes. Don't know what to do - do I put the Paypal dispute in place before contacting her in case she closes the account or something?

Is n't that always the risk with bundles ? Surely 5 to 6 clothes could be a spread of clothes suitable for that age group , which 5ans would be, if at the smaller end of the range.the 18-24 month smight be another matter but perhaps you need to reread that she wasnlt including stuff up to that age. Unless you paid a lot I'd put it down to experience.

pickie · 13/02/2008 08:55

5 ans is 5 years (french) and french stuff is usually 1 year smaller the UK sizes

laura032004 · 13/02/2008 09:01

The only text was: Four Pairs of trousers for a five year old, and they're in the 5-6 category. So going by pickie's theory, they're really 4-5. Definitely no mention of anything below 18-24m in that bundle.

I paid £40 in total, so quite a bit considering that over 50% of it is useless, and the rest not exactly what I wanted (or what was advertised).

Will start a Paypal dispute, and hopefully agree a return of half of the stuff.

but she did state "for a five year old"
She had to chose a category. If she had used 4-5 category she could have ended up with a buyer saying these are too big I wanted them for a 4 year old.
Going on just ages is not a good idea unless you are familiar with the makes. Always best to ask for exact measurements prior to bidding.

have you contacted her? You need to prior to raising a dispute

MsPontipine · 13/02/2008 13:16

I don't think you're going to be covered by the usual Ebay/Paypal protection as you dealt privately.

She'll possibly get into trouble with Ebay by doing the sale directly - extremely frowned upon - avoidence of Ebay selling fees etc. If you raise a dispute this will probably bring this to their notice.

I would have thought your only option to rely on her (hopefully) goodwill by contacting her and reaching some kind of compromise. Try and resolve this amicably or I'm afraid your situation will only be lose/lose.

Flibbertyjibbet · 13/02/2008 13:29

I would put it down to experience.

I never buy a bundle unless everything is listed separately and I can see the make etc and the actual size as shown on the label, I think most sellers of bundles do it this way so the buyers are in no doubt.

If the clothes are nice but just a bit small then make up a little bundle of the smaller stuff and sell it back on ebay.

VictorianSqualor · 13/02/2008 13:34

TBF, you bought clothes that in her eyes are suitable for a five year old, so there's not really anything you can expect paypal to do about that.

The only bundle I'd be really pissed off with is the birth upwards one, I'd email her and say you're not happy as item 'is not as described' which it isn't.

I wouldn't buy anything in bundles unless I had seen pictures of each item personally, and I've sold bundles in the same way, each item was pictured and each item was listed.

PrettyCandles · 13/02/2008 13:38

TBH only the baby stuff seems not to be as described. As Pickie says, French baby and children clothes are smaller than British, but it may well be that they fitted the seller's LOs so she didn't realise that.

scottishmummy · 13/02/2008 13:40

it was a private sale you initiated outwith ebay...so dont think ebay rules necessarily apply tbh think just put this down to (bad)experience. shame you are disapointed

VictorianSqualor · 13/02/2008 13:42

Oh, didnt read properly, Scottishmummy is right, you wont get any protection from paypal if it's not an Ebay auction.

laura032004 · 13/02/2008 13:42

I wasn't expecting to do anything via the Ebay complaints procedure, I know I'm outside of that.

I've emailed the seller, and done a Paypal dispute thing. Hopefully we can arrange a return of the smaller bundle, and I'll just keep the other clothes for DS2.

Bramshott · 13/02/2008 13:43

5 ans is still 5 years, just that French clothes (for children, and for adults) are usually smaller than UK ones - just like M&S newborn is smaller than Mothercare newborn.

scottishmummy · 13/02/2008 13:57

why dont you cut your losses and sell them on?

bubblagirl · 13/02/2008 14:00

4 ans and 5 ans is correct ans is french for years

if you buy outside of e bay you are not covered but if you contact her it may be genuine mistake but only about baby items as everything else sounds correct

you shouldnt have done a dispute until heard back from her as you chose to do this outside e bay

you could have just asked her about returning baby items and getting re fund for them

bubblagirl · 13/02/2008 14:01

i also agree that her child could have been in the 4 ans and 5 ans as my ds was wearing 1 ans at 2

really its only the baby stuff you need to return to her
