Courier/ collection in person?!

I’ve have just sold a pair of art deco club chairs on EBay for collection in
person. Unfortunately they went tor start price of 0.99p, which although a tad annoying is not the end of the world. I just need them out of the house for space. I’ve just been contacted by the buyer who lives hundreds of miles away and wants me to arrange pick up with her company driver “Dave” after she passes my details on.
Ebay’s only helpful suggestion is to ask her to cancel, which she refuses.

Isn’t the deal with collection in person, one don’t get market value, but also barely has to make any effort?

Yes just refuse, she will cancel if she can't get the items. Be firm it's really not worth the hassle.

Youvebeenseeingsos · 19/03/2023 13:38

Why does it matter if she herself collects, or ‘Dave’ collects on her behalf?

You would have to liaise with someone, does it matter if it’s Dave being as you just want them gone?

AxolotlOnions · 19/03/2023 13:45

As long as Dave doesn't ask you to pay for insurance or something else scammy, what's the problem? Dave will come and pick them up at a mutually convenient time and they're out of your way.

Hi, thanks for your replies. It’s not really a tin hat concern about Dave being some shadowy figure. I just can’t be arsed for 56p, waiting for a call from Dave “this week”possibly packing it and then waiting in for his two hour window. Love a bit of eBaying, but would always ask pre end of the auction if a courier would be okay. Often it’s not, because they can’t be arsed either.

Totally agree with you OP.
Longtime eBay seller and this sort of buyer is very annoying.

As you say, even if you just have to wait around for a while there is also the issue of some kind of packaging and if they get damaged (or even if the buyer decides they don't want them) eBay will side with them.

Cancel the sale (even if you have to say they are damaged and no-longer fit for sale) and then either FBMP or charity shop.

@Cupcakequeen75

You might be a long time seller but I really hope that I never have to deal with a seller like you.

It is not the buyers fault that the item only went for 99p. That is always the risk a seller takes when starting an item so low. The seller and buyer have now in effect reached an agreement that the deal is going to be concluded at that price.

@op Please do not cancel the sale. Dealing with a third party is really not much different to dealing with the buyer. In fact it will probably be easier seeing as the courier is a professional at this.

Ebay relies on a lot of integrity from both buyers and sellers alike. You also have no obligation to pack the item, as soon as the item leaves your property it is not your responsibility but I suggest taking a lot of photos with the chairs on the day of collection just in case.

For future sales of big items I do however suggest using marketplace or gumtree.

Exactly this. Someone is coming to pick it up and take it away. What does it matter if this is the actual buyer, or someone coming on their behalf?

Thelnebriati · 25/03/2023 11:00

It matters if the buyer expects OP to package the item so its fit for transport. OP listed the item as collect only to place that responsibility on the buyer.
Some couriers will package the item, but if they arrive damaged the buyer still has a case against the seller.

Soapyspuds · 25/03/2023 12:56

No buyer should have that expectation, if they do the seller should put them right.

OP is selling the item for collection. There is zero obigation on a seller to package up the item, unless it is implicitly stated in the description that they will.

Soapyspuds · 25/03/2023 13:00

but if they arrive damaged the buyer still has a case against the seller

This is why I said to take photos whilst the item is being collected. If damaged in transit the buyer needs to take this up with their courier who will be insured.

don't list for 99p if you dont' want to sell for 99p
