Buyer wants a refund.

I sold an item and the buyer wants a refund. I don't want to argue so I have said that when she returns it to me I will refund.
I'm new to selling though,so do I refund postage costs too? Hers and mine?

I think the usual rule is that if the item is defective/ problem is due to something on your end, then you refund postage.
If the buyer has just changed their mind, they pay postage.
But check the Ts&Cs of whatever platform you sold it on.

It was Ebay. So I refund the postage she paid for me to send it say £5.00 plus the postage she paid to send it back?

The refund usually includes the postage paid by them for you to post it.

It's presumed it's because it's not as described or something; your "fault" so they shouldn't be out the postage, you should be.

They also often require the seller to pay return postage if it's your fault.

If there's nothing they can say is your fault ie it's not "not as described" etc. It's unfair that you should have to resell, pay the outgoing postage and pay the return postage.

Have they even offered to pay the return postage?

Why do they say they want a refund?

I say with with the caveat that if they do open a case (which is the only way I'm aware they can get a refund, other than opening a card in PayPal) eBay often sides with the buyer

It depends why they want a refund

*case in PayPal

Buyer needs to open a case. If it is not as described you will pay the postage. If it is change of mind/didn't like it, buyer pays.

There seems to be a grey area with things 'damaged ' as I thought seller is supposed to refund postage but I bought something that leaked and honestly opened the correct case, only to be ripped off by the seller who did not refund the postage for a sachet of wash out hair colour that had been badly packed and leaked all over Royal Mail, ending up in one of their plastic bags, and out of pocket for 2 lots of postage. They only refunded the cost of the damaged item, I don't know how that happened TBH. Won't make that mistake again.

In my experience people often claim a refund for no reason. One buyer told me the camera he had bought 2 months ago arrived faulty but he’s only just noticed! Another woman claimed the skirt never arrived.
