Large item not collected WWYD

I sold a big item and gave the buyer some leeway with collection so she could collect a few items with one trip. However, two weekends have come and gone and even though we have agreed a day she doesn't get back to me.

There's no option to cancel because the buyer hasn't collected and she paid using PayPal despite the auction saying cash on collection.

Can you just refund her through PayPal and re list the item?

Pompom2367 · 26/06/2022 18:40

Could you message her again and tell her you are going to contact pay Pal to issue a refund

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 26/06/2022 18:42

I don't think that ties up the Ebay end though and she can still leave me feedback (probably -ve even though it's not been collected for 2 weeks)

If she’s paid by PayPal and is collecting I’d be wary of her saying she didn’t receive it even when she does collect it

chillinwithmygnomies · 26/06/2022 18:46

For collection only items PayPal isn't advised as buyer can open a not received dispute and get the money back (not saying that's what everyone does but is well known).

I think I'd refund and tell her cash on collection by a certain date or item gets relisted.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 26/06/2022 18:51

I use the collection code issued and key it into Ebay when it's collected. I can cancel the order but there is no option that reflects this situation.

Why not contact eBay and explain? How did she pay through PayPal without your details?

I think I'll have to do that - state a deadline and say I'll have to cancel an relist after that date. It's annoying though because I can still receive bad feedback in this situation.

I feel a break from Ebay coming on!

Payment by PayPal is a mandatory option even with collection items.

I had this with a bulky low value item (£15). Listing said cash on collection, but buyer sent money via PayPal. That made me nervous so I refunded through PayPal and again said c on c only. Buyer went on to be a right pain in the arse - always a reason why he couldn’t collect - car breaking down on a daily basis. After a week I told him item no longer available. He sent abusive emails all through the night, which I ignored. He left me bad feedback which eBay ignored (I didn’t contact eBay).

It didn’t make sense that he was travelling over 150 miles to collect from me. I was trying to work out what the scam was, but never did. I lost the PayPal fee but nothing more.

Refund by paypal & apply to have the sale cancelled ,calling it seller choice. Politely message buyer to say this.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/06/2022 19:08

How did she pay through PayPal if it was cash on collection?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/06/2022 19:14

I'd refund her anyway. If she does collect she can pay cash. It's really dodgy to accept Paypal on collection items.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 26/06/2022 20:35

It's not possible to eliminate PayPal as a payment option. You have to include it even when an item is collection only.

Ebay provide a QR code and a 6 digit pin code for collection items now to deter scammers.

I don't think she's a scammer - I just think she's storing the item at my house until she can fill a van. She might also just be a CF who might or might not want the item and is still deciding. Which is annoying.

You can request to cancel the transaction, OP. Which means start by refunding the paypal payment.

Adviceneededplease1234 · 26/06/2022 21:00

You can cancel using the option “buyer asked to cancel” anything else like out of stock etc is counted as a defect against your account. I always use that and then say to the buyer you have cancelled it as it’s not been collected and then block them from bidding again. Collection only items are better to be advertised on fb marketplace, gumtree, Preloved etc instead of eBay, much less hassle and no fee.

Adviceneededplease1234 · 26/06/2022 21:01

And if you cancel it on eBay it will automatically refund via PayPal.

lljkk · 26/06/2022 22:35

PP are right, go down the path of cancelling the transaction so that you get your eBay selling fee back.

Sallypally0 · 26/06/2022 23:24

Can you still cancel a sale by saying it got broken?

Outdated advice.

Ebay now issue a scannable code for Paypal collection. It's perfectly safe and changed about 18 months ago.
