I'm an eBay newbie, and just had a message re one of my listings, asking if they can collect the item if they win as they live locally. The thing is, i only accept Paypal, and i was under the impression that i should only post, as otherwise there's no record of a transaction, in case of any comeback.

Any advice / tips as to how to word a message back without sounding rude? Thanks

Do you want them to collect?
If so you can say you only accept cash on collection

If it's a large item, or postage is high, then bidders soemtimes ask to collect.
It's entirely up to you. If you don't like the idea of a stranger turning up at your home, then just say, 'sorry, but collection is not an option'

You could ask for paypal payment before collecting, so you have proof you got the money. But I guess that doesnt prove you gave them the iteM! Its highly unlikely they'd be out to scam you though.

What you could say is that you don't mind collection but give an agreed time when you have someone else in the house with you.

Make sure that if they pay via paypal that you give a couple of days for money to clear etc.

If they are hoping to save money on postage, then decide if you don't mind letting the item go for just the bidding price, as sometimes people like to cover all their costs so add a little extra to their postage to cover it, so there item doesn't go for a 1p.

I often say that the item is sent out only, because it is often easier and you don't get people calling for items with money etc.

if you accept paypal for collection then they just file non receipt of goods and get there money back
It is a well known scam

TheBlonde · 09/01/2008 13:54

their not there (oops )

Thanks for all your replies.

TheBlonde - that's what i'm worried about, having heard some horror stories on here! The auction only runs till tomorrow, and there's a lot of other interest in the item, so i might take the cowardly option and just not respond to his message yet.

I often get asked this, and just reply, yes, no problems, but it must be cash on collection. I've not had any problems yet. You kind of win too, as you don't pay the Paypal fees that way, so get a bit extra from the sale.
