eBay fees- higher than I imagined

I've not used ebay for ages (but have 300 selling feedbacks) but have now sold an item.

I'm shocked at the fees! Ok maybe I should read the small print. But - as an example - not exact figures. I sold an item for £40 and added £5 for postage. Ebay have put £40.50 in my bank account. So in effect I've had to pay the postage not the buyer, looking at the net amount from ebay.

This means they are taking around10% in fees. Is this correct?

Yes.

Fees are 12.5% I think? It’s marginally less than one would have paid in the past including the PayPal fees which no longer apply, I believe.

I used to sell on eBay but have started selling on Vinted, which I prefer as the buyer pays the transaction fee.

Yeah this is right. I also find it quite steep so tend to add 10% to my postage fee as that's factored into the total that the fee is deducted from. When I add in packaging and petrol to get to a post office (none within walking distance from me as the one in our village closed years ago) it means if an item sells for under a fiver it usually ends up meaning I'm actually not making any money on it at all 😔 I've tried using Facebook Marketplace to overcome this but then I have the issue of scammers or people who just don't show up.

I also used to use eBay but moved over to Vinted - so much easier and hassle free, plus no selling fees.

DockOTheBay · 03/04/2022 22:32

Its a bit cheeky that they also charge fees on the postage.

CrabbyCat · 03/04/2022 22:36

I also add 10% to postage to cover the fees, I find it really unfair they charge them even when you buy postage through eBay!

ginghamstarfish · 03/04/2022 22:49

Yes, they are grabbing bastards. I think it's 12.9% plus 30p an item. I now tend to wait until they have promotions like max £1 fees or 80% off fees and list stuff then.

LizzieMacQueen · 05/04/2022 18:19

I found, to my cost, that when a buyer changes their mind and cancels, you don't get that fixed fee part (30p) back. Small amount but a bit cheeky of them.

ragged · 05/04/2022 18:21

ebay have taken 10% of whole transaction plus a small amount, 20-30p, for many years. Still more profitable than selling on facebook most often

Try Vinted. No fees for seller. Completely different model to eBay. Shoppers seem to expect to pay less than eBay though.
