Buyer dispute. Possible scam?

There seems to be a couple of recent similar threads, I notice, about buyer not recognising the transaction.

The same has happened with me, but I was confused about being asked for tracking - I no longer have it as I sent weeks ago, because it was successfully delivered to eBay who then shipped it to the buyer using the global shipping program. eBay international shipping shows it had been delivered and positive feedback left by the buyer.

I telephoned eBay who told me the buyer had been suspended (no feedback). I resubmitted the tracking number eBay provided, plus added that I'd used Royal Mail 2nd class.

I'm concerned that due to my lack of tracking to the eBay distribution centre in the UK, they're going to claim from me for the value mentioned in the case. Obviously the buyer has my item still.

Sorry, more waffle than intended. I'm a bit concerned, haven't come across anything like it in over 10 years.

How has the buyer contacted you? If they paid using Pay Pal they might be able to raise a claim through them for 6 months after purchase so don't lose that tracking number. Log into Pay Pal and see if you can add it to the transaction

The buyer had no feedback and has been permanently suspended by eBay. It's a bank chargeback, raised 'outside of eBay' as eBay customer services told me. PayPal aren't involved. There was no option to add anything other than a tracking number in the eBay case.

I resubmitted the tracking number. It's made tricky because eBay posted it to them, fully tracked, via the global shipping program, so I'm not sure why they have involved me.

Sounds like a scam yes. I'd contact your bank and explain the situation

amberleyc · 29/03/2022 10:34

I'm not sure what my bank can do at the moment? Unless eBay decide to take the money for the item I sold from my account, and decide the 'case' in favour of the buyer's bank? I'm not sure what I do then. Open a case of my own for the cost of the item which the buyer still has?

Ebay have told you this isnt happening through ebay, its happening through your bank. Contact the bank today and tell them theres a fraudulent chargeback on your account, have the tracking number and Ebay listing number ready along with the date of posting and delivery.

@Thelnebriati it's probably me being a bit dim! I had the impression (from a guess only) that eBay would take it from my bank if the case is not decided in my favour. Perhaps that amounts to the same thing.

I should possibly call eBay again? What is seller protection for if not cases like this? Though the person I spoke to last time seemed clueless as to what was going on initially and had to take time reading to work it out.

I don't understand why eBay have opened a case/dispute for the value of the item (the postage value, the buyer paid, through global shipping program will be much higher and is not included as obviously I didn't receive that). It seems a strange way to do things. They're at the 'investigating' stage now, apparently.

Sorry, thanks for all the responses so far!

So is it a bank charge back or an eBay case? Your posts are a bit confusing as you've mentioned both those things.

A charge back is direct from your bank and you need to contact them. If it's an eBay case surely if they have tracking that says it's been delivered they won't give the buyer a refund.

amberleyc · 29/03/2022 13:51

Sorry!
The buyer was suspended (and has no feedback). They started a bank chargeback, presumably against eBay, so the customer service person told me. EBay then opened a dispute against me for the amount of the item, asking me for domestic tracking only, even though eBay themselves successfully sent it to the buyer through the global shipping program. Buyer also left positive feedback, so I thought all was well!

Your buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on Xxxxxxx 2022. This means that they disputed a charge directly with their payment institution. They are requesting xxxxxxx back, and the reason for this dispute is that the buyer had an issue with the transaction.
Please respond to this dispute by 29 Mar, 2022.

Yes, they do have the tracking. I was confused when I saw it had been delivered, and each stage of the journey. Also the positive feedback left for me by buyer before they were suspended.

It's very confusing. I have no idea why they've asked for domestic shipping information from me to the UK eBay distribution centre, or what difference that makes.

Ebay have been going down the pan recently but I've never seen anything as bad as this. Contact the bank today, let the bank fraud team deal with it, give them the tracking number and tell them the buyer left positive feedback.

SpicePumpkin · 29/03/2022 14:14

Hmm this seems like EBay should step up more then. I'd contact eBay again, maybe the person you spoke with isn't that knowledgable. But also your bank just to keep them in the loop.

Rosehugger · 29/03/2022 14:16

Why would eBay decide in favour of a buyer they have already suspended?

amberleyc · 29/03/2022 14:43

Thank you!

I'll contact eBay again and contact my bank. I'll update when I know the outcome.

I had a quick look on the eBay community (I've never used this). Some people seem to think these chargeback situations are more common under the new managed payments instead of PayPal, but I don't know how accurate that is.

I don't know, but I don't feel confident for some reason. Looks like eBay are dealing with buyer's bank.

Partly worried that I didn't have a tracking code for domestic shipping to the eBay distribution centre (tracked postage wasn't paid for in any case, it was ordinary second class - I didn't keep that associated code as buyer had received and left feedback for me, so all done I thought). EBay sent it on to buyer, in the EU, with tracking.

Once the Global Shipping program has sent you the email saying the package has been successfully despatched from the UK it's process completed for you.

This is why it's so expensive for the buyer. It's highly insured. EBay insure your package, they do everything from that point.

Advise your buyer that EBay will deal with any delay queries and as they are insured they will sort out compensation. You can say it is completely out of your hands as eBay hold the insurance for the item. It is completely out of your hands. Your liability stops the moment the GSP receive your item.

Then don't think about it again.

EBay will not take your money to refund the buyer.

I agree, do this.
