absolutely furious with my DH

He's only gone and bought a laptop off an ebayer seller with hardly any feedback. He's paid £550 on his credit card and now the item has been deleted from ebay and there's no trace of it in his bought items.

No request for feedback, nothing to say anything, in fact.

We've had furious rows tonight with him telling me (rather naively I feel) that it will turn up and I'm too cynical. But I believe if something is too good to be true then it probably is.

Why, why, why can he not see that this is a scam and we have lost the money? He didn't tell me he was spending it either, and that just makes me all the more angry. We just cannot afford to lose the money and we don't even need the farking thing. We already have a lap top (am typing on it.)

Any ideas oh wise ebaying types? Am trying to remain calm but am actually very upset.

Did he pay directly with his credit card? If so you can contact the credit card company and get a refund.

pipsqueak · 27/11/2007 00:08

no expert on this but dont you just contqct paypal and get your money back ? sure i have read on other threads that people reclaim after the trasnaction is complete . hope you resolve this - it does sound dodgy ...

dd666 · 27/11/2007 00:09

bump!
for that you could have chosen brand new one at pc world sorry im of no help dont go near ebay!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 27/11/2007 00:10

I tried to get paypal to refund me for anitem i did not recieve. I paid £205 and got back £100....

soapbox · 27/11/2007 00:11

No need to panic!

He should call his credit card company in the morning and ask them to stop the payment pending an investigation into whether the item exists. The credit company will do the work for you.

I would just make sure that the call is made first thing in the morning.

Open a paypal dispute immediately (assuming he used his cc through paypal). If there is any money left in the seller's account I think it gets refunded to buyers in the order in which they lodged their complaints, so better to be standing at the front of the queue than the back.

If he used it direct, ring the card issuer instantly and tell them exactly what happened.

You can also contact eBay and get the seller's contact details. I'd do that now in case they de-register. At least then you'll have something for the police if it gets to that.

llareggub · 27/11/2007 07:53

It gets worse...the seller is in China. Am not sure the police will be of any use here. I think he taken leave of his senses. On credit card though...

Right. Call credit card company immediately and see what they can do.

And this morning, check that your DH hasn't put both legs into the same leg of his trousers...

ninedragons · 27/11/2007 08:30

Did he give them the cc number directly? If so, I'm afraid I would cancel the card.

sixlostmonkeys · 27/11/2007 08:57

definitely call your credit card people.

then put your dh up for auction on ebay and let us see how you word the description

seriously crossing my fingers here for you - way too much money to lose

Any progress, llareggrub?

I am in China and my husband speaks fluent Mandarin. It may not do much good, but if it does all go pear-shaped and you can get a (real) phone number from eBay, he can ring and say he has contacts in the police (only way to get anything done in this f**ing place sometimes) so if he's thinking of ripping off anyone it shouldn't be you.

Get his address, too, if you can. I don't want to get your hopes up, but DH's work is stopping IP piracy so actually the police in Shenzhen do owe him a few favours for making them look like they are not sitting on their bums and ignoring factories churning out fakes (which of course they are - DH is retained by the victim companies and not the police).
