Sending a taxi to collect?

Hello, I'm selling a not cheap child's bike and someone wants to 'buy it now' but send a taxi to collect. They have good reviews but I just worry they could claim they didn't collect it and then be automatically refunded through PayPal or something? Am I being too cautious? I listed it as collection only. She asked if she could send a courier but I said no as I don't have a box and can't wait in.

Surely they could claim that anyway. Just get the taxi driver to sign saying bike received or take a picture of it going in said taxi, you will have email saying they are sending one. Some people can’t drive would seem sensible solution to the problem.

If the buyer comes in the taxi and pays cash and collects the item you're completely covered as they see it and then pay the cash so are considered to be happy with it and there's no recourse for them if they pay cash then change their minds. If someone else/ the random taxi driver collects or they pay through Ebay you're not protected completely after the sale as they could potentially claim not received or not as described and get a refund.

Thanks both. She wants to send a taxi but not come herself. I didn't think of taking a photo of it going in the boot etc. I did list the ad as cash on collection but I don't think eBay lets you not provide PayPal as an option. It just makes me feel uneasy.

Try searching paypal for what you need to prove they took delivery. No mention of photos, personal receipts etc... You'll lose an item not received every time.

Steer clear.

NB Buyer reviews are totally meaningless. Most are left at the point of sale and a negative CANNOT be left.

You cannot prove collection - particularly via a 3rd party!

Happycat1212 · 21/05/2021 19:06

I wouldn’t

seven201 · 21/05/2021 22:16

Thank you all. She's agreed to collect in person but doesn't want to pay cash... It's a bit moot now anyway as she was going to do the buy it now, but someone has bid at the starting price, which has made the buy it now option disappear (I hadn't realised that was a thing!). eBay does make me nervous these days but shpock isn't really a thing in my area.

Scam.
I'd steer clear
In person cash or nothing

Cheesypea · 21/05/2021 22:29

Yes scam. Dont do it

Warmduscher · 21/05/2021 22:33

You should never use PayPal for collection only items. You have no proof that the buyer collected the item, they can say they never picked it up and eBay will make you refund them.

Always, always cash only for collection.

Just for your future reference if you’re selling on eBay OP, I’ve been selling large items on eBay recently for Cash on Collection only. Yes, you do have to add PayPal as an option but I always state in the description to not pay by PayPal (any payment will be returned) and Cash Collection only. Hasn’t been an issue, once item is collected and paid for you can mark it as paid in eBay (think it actually says item has been collected). eBay then take charges as per normal (though I’ve not been moved over to the new managed payments system yet so not sure if that’s still viable). If you are concerned this person is scamming and may bid again, just block them from doing so by adding to your block list.

seven201 · 21/05/2021 22:48

Thank you everyone. I do have a message on my ad that says cash only. I think I'll update it to add the bit about PayPal payments will be returned as it's cash only. Good idea, thanks.

I think this lady is genuine, but I'm not going to risk it.

If you're still on the Paypal payment system and ebay hasn't moved you over, the best thing to do is to create a new gmail account without an associated paypal account, and use THIS email in the listing.

If you use a GENUINE one, and decide to return the payment, Paypal now keep the fees (they used to just keep the 30p transaction fee).

Paypal will email you to say you have money, open an account and claim it, but if you don't, the payment will then sit as pending until the buyer goes into their Paypal account and cancels the payment. NO fees at all are then due.

And yes, you can have different paypal addresses on different ebay listings.

Not with cash, no. They don’t have any buyer protection.

Just get the taxi driver to sign saying bike received or take a picture of it going in said taxi

Wouldn’t make any difference if the buyer opened a claim for non receipt. The only thing of any value is a proof of delivery from courier.

Thank you potato and Lottie

Anyone know how to refund the PayPal payment? I'm really struggling to work out how!

The same lady has won the auction and paid by PayPal, despite me stating cash only. She's now agreed to pay cash but I can't for the life of me find a way to refund the PayPal payment (tried ebay and PayPal)! Aghh.

Have now managed to do via PayPal website (didn't work on the app!)
