Have just started using Ebay, to begin with sent of cheques to cover the cost of purchases. I then became brave and started using PayPal. Have just had an E,mail off one of Buyers saying that my PayPal will not be cleared until 14 Nov. I paid for it on the 5th Nov.

Does PayPal normally take this long?

Is PayPal the same thing as an E cheque?

Thanks

ah, you're having the same trouble with paypal as me.
ok for some unknown reason paypal have suddenly begun insisting that you send an echeque instead of the instant payment - ive had this for the past week - some go through straight from my card or bank account and some they will only accept by echeque. ive been on the phone to them and they say its a security measure but you cannot change it...tis crazy

hth

Oh, so it is nothing that I am doing wrong then! So worried that I was going to get negative feedback! Thought maybe somehow I had set up an E cheque account rather than a paypal acc> What a pain............

they are a pain in the arse i tell ya! ive been sending postal orders - its quicker

pinkbubble · 07/11/2007 22:07

But aren't postal orders expensive? I went to PO the other day and she told me it was going to cost £3.94 for the postal order and then the sum on the postal order would be £3.49. Did I miss understand her and the whole total would be £3.94. TBH its not what it sounded like - maybe I caught clerk having a bad day, and she couldn't be bothered!

yes they work out a couple of quid dearer, but its better than the seller waiting ages for the flipping echeque to clear - and as you said, you run the risk of the neg feedback.

sixlostmonkeys · 08/11/2007 07:24

you won't get neg FB for a paypal payment that needs clearing. if you do, then you have an unbelievably awkward seller. I get lots of echeques that take 10 days (?) sometimes it's quicker. So long as the payment is showing as processing in the sellers account then they have no cause for complaint. It's no different to waiting for a cheque to clear (easier actually as the seller doesn't have to walk to the bank)

be careful sending postal orders - you have no buyer protection if you don't use paypal and it is also advisable to send a PO by recorded delivery (extra 70p)

As a seller, although it's a pain to get an e-cheque, I don't hold the seller responsible for the inconvenience Possibly ask if the seller would like to cancel the e-cheque, and you can do a bank transfer instead. The e-cheque may clear earlier or later than the estimated date. Bank transfers are immediate within the same bank, or take around 3/4 working days otherwise.

dee24 · 08/11/2007 11:45

You won't get neg for e-cheques. There is nothing you can do and it tbh it's just the same as you sending a cheque in the post. PO for small amount are far too expensive imo.

I got an e-cheque once and was such a pain in the backside, waited 2 weeks to clear! But it wasn't the sellers fault and for some reason a few weeks later I paid something through paypal an it went through as a flipping e-cheque. Wouldn't worry about it though, the seller can see you have sent payment and shouldn't mind that it takes a while, if they do then yes it's an awkward seller.

If you back your funding up with credit card details it seems to stop the e cheque thing and do instant funds transfers again. I never had a problem till my previous credit card ran out, and they suddenly my payemnts were taking 2 weeks to clear - entered back up funding details and it solved the problem.

No idea why, as is still the same bank acc as I've always used!!

pinkbubble · 11/11/2007 23:06

Oh, thanks for that, really appreciate any advice, will try and do that!

Also does anyone know how to stop an E cheque, I have a seller who has said that they do not accept E cheques under £5 and I never noticed and now they are asking me to stop it and I cant work out how to do it! I am so not technology minded![blush
