What's the consensus on low start no reserve auctions?

I have read all the academic studies that say that the highest prices are achieved by auctions that start very low with no reserve and run for 10 days. Theoretically I know that people get attached to things and start thinking of them as "theirs" and bidding accordingly.

But it's quite nerve-wracking if it's your stuff. Has anyone been brave enough to do these and had good (or better still, great) experiences?

I think putting an actual reserve on items puts people off bidding and can be counter productive. (The minimum you can set a reserve at is £50 btw).

If I’m having a big clear out and want rid of a load of stuff I will generally start everything at 99p, but rule of the thumb is never set the start price at less than you will be happy to accept for it. (But then again don’t be suprised if it doesn’t sell)

Since this thread was started on Tue 06-Nov-07 Ebay have made many changes to the site, one important one being that they dumped the search engine they were using and started with a new one which affects how items are shown, if at all.

Bear this in mind when listing as your items no longer get a fair chance of being seen, and search is manipulated. If anyone wants to check this out just Google 'Cassini search engine'.
