Scammer? And what to do?

So just over a week ago, I sold a buggy board via eBay. I sent as normal, tracking shows delivered two days later. Buyer claims that they have not received it and opened up an 'item not received case'. Fast forward a few days later and the item has now mysteriously appeared and they have opened a return case. Fair enough, it is possible that the item has been misplaced etc and now found, the buyer may have changed their mind, ordered the wrong thing etc. But the reason that the buyer has stated for the return has made me suspicious. The buyer states that the item is not as described, then goes to state that I have sent them the wrong thing and it apparently doesn't fit their pushchair. This is basically impossible as this is the only official board which fits this model, so if this doesn't fit, nothing will. I am having suspicions that the buyer may have realised that they will most likely loose the case and have changed tactics. I am now worried that I may get something completely different returned...

Does this sound suspicious or am I overthinking it? 🤔 If the above situation does occur, is there anything I can do to protect myself?

Thank you in advance for your help.

They might be a bit dozy and have actually got a different buggy than the one it is for.
I keep getting bidders on a collection only item who live 1000 miles across the country!

@indecentcakes

Thank you. They have said that they specifically have the pushchair it is supposed to fit (unless they don't actually know which pushchair they have) I think it's more the combination of the not received and then return which is making me worried. I guess I want to be precaucious as I've heard so many horror stories for eBay 😅

If they haven't already, make sure they request a refund through the ebay function, rather than in a message. This automatically sets of the refund chain of events. A refund label is created for them and they have to send it back to you and wait for you to receive it before you need to issue a refund. You can then double check it and make sure its the same thing, and in the same condition you sent it. You have your photos on your listing as to what you sent and that is your proof and go back to ebay if you get something different back.

Sounds like just a ditzy buyer tbh. They have nothing to gain by asking for a refund as basically they need to return exact same thing to you so its a trip to post office/arrange courier or whatever for them, with no financial gain, just a refund. You will still have your board to relist.

@cozycat1

Thank you. I hope that is the case. I have heard that there is little chance of eBay siding with you as there is no way to prove that the item you sent is the same as the listing (especially since the buyer claims I have sent the wrong thing) while in theory I have the pictures on the listing, I can't prove that I actually sent the same thing.
