What protections are there for Ebay sellers? - new user, I have had my fingers burnt

I thought ebay had some really good policies protecting its users from nefarious practices, they certainly claim to be tough on people misusing their returns policy, so I am pretty miffed. I have been left out of pocket by a dishonest buyer and even though there's loads of evidence to show she is in the wrong, eBay still gave her a refund and took it from my PayPal account.

I have only been selling for a month, was clearing out my attic, I have loads of old toys and games from the 1980s and they are really collectable, if a bit dusty. I looked after them well but they have been put away for a long time.

One of the first things I sold was a doll, in really beautiful condition, original accessories, and I had no idea how much they go for so I sold it to the first person to send me an offer, of only £10 plus £3.10 p&p. When she got it though she said it was filthy dirty - oh, but she'd wash it, if I refunded her the £10 she paid for the trouble.... So, a free doll?I refused so she insisted on sending it back for a full refund - at my expense...

Messages were exchanged, I completely refuted that it was filthy (the pictures were really clear), I phoned eBay several times to ask advice and they told me to accept the return because she was entitled to a refund anyway, then I could offer her a partial refund when I had got it back ....

When I got the doll back, she was still beautiful, really sellable, but I was out of pocket two lots of postage and fees so I only issued a partial refund - all exactly what eBay told me to do..... But I was getting more confused, the seller was adament, quite rude, that I had sold her a filthy doll, too dirty for her to give to her kids..... Who buys a 35 year old doll off of ebay to give to their kids without washing them first!!! I asked for specifics - maybe I had missed something. She just kept saying that as I was new to Ebay I didn't know how it worked, etc.... But it turns out this lady also had a selling page full of vintage toys!! So of course, she would know how much my doll was worth, would never have given it to her kids, and would have known how to clean a dress - she just wanted it for free. At least I got it back undamaged, I guess, but even after all these phones calls, messages and it seemed to me a clear cut case of someone trying to take advantage of an ebay newbie, ebay still gave her the full refund and took the money from my PayPal....

It may only be a few quid, but it seems common place for people to try it on - I think she particularly targetted me because I am new. If it's that easy for buyers to take advantage, then why wouldn't it happen to me again, and again, what can I do to protect myself if ebay will always side with the buyer?

It's grim OP and all I can suggest is that you make your descriptions as clear and idiot proof as you possibly can. I do the maximum amount of photographs (12) and describe every single thing, give measurements, write disclaimers i.e I'd have said it was an old doll and should not be expected to be in pristine as new condition - that sort of thing. Always send signed for or recorded if worth more than £50. Make your packaging as secure as you possibly can.
Beyond that you can do no more. We all have our share of scammers and chancers but you can take steps to make it harder for them

Thank you for your reply, excellent advice! I did say the doll was old and dusty, those are pretty much my exact words, so have appealed and still waiting to hear...

and I must admit I am a bit in love with ebay again after I sold an old she ra doll for £21 yesterday!! I actually said she was pretty much destroyed in the description, that I had tried to colour in her hair and her headdress was completely crushed, I only put on the starting bid of £2 to reflect condition - then watched open mouthed as there was a bidding war and the price went up and up a minute before the auction ended!!..

My husband said that a lot of people collect these old dolls and the fun, the joy is in finding old ones in a horrible state and restoring them. I am amazed!!

I use Facebook marketplace instead of ebay these days. I've been scammed too.

PayPal offers literally zero protection for sellers. It's not in eBay's best interest. If you get a dodgy buyer, remove your card from your PayPal account immediately then they can't take the funds from you.

Do it quickly though, the first sign of any issue eBay will nefariously reserve the funds from your account. Fuckers.

Ebay has just about zero protection for sellers, I stopped selling after several buyers claimed not to have received their itemsHmm

Of course Ebay gave them a full refund & of course it's possible the parcels didn't arrive but I was left without items or money. I'd use recorded delivery if I ever sold anything again.

It's great when it works for you but there's no protection when it doesn't

It obviously relies on people mostly being honest and fair......

eBay are fucking useless.
Both to buyers and sellers.
I gave up on them a while back now. Either I bought something, was ripped off and never got refunded and couldn't leave feedback as it was removed or was selling something and got a cheeky fucker take the piss.
I find if you phone them you get further, if they told you partial refund ring and ask them why they've then gone back on this.

I have phoned for help but one thing I have noticed is that they all say something different, then the ebay community forum says something else, then in practice it's another thing entirely!!

I am nearly finished listing all my stuff, though - I was just going to throw it away and I am making a bit of spending money so I guess I will persevere until all my stuff is gone. I don't like facebay - I don't want people knowing who I am or where I live when they buy my care bears or old earrings!!
