How do you sort your returns as a seller ?

For the first time in 15 years I’ve been asked if I will accept a return as the top was a bit too small for her.

I’ve probably not kept up to date with the latest recommendations, but my settings must have been automatically set to allow automatic returns and buyer pays return postage.

I said yes she could return ( didn’t think I could say no ) but suggested as she got it at a good price then maybe sell on herself. We are talking less than £10 so not huge sums of money, and that it’s perfectly good etiquette to sell on if something is unsuitable (as that’s what I would do especially for low value items)

Anyhow, item has been sent back to me and I think she’s used the pre paid label.

Hopefully I won’t have to accept another return for another few years - but what advice would you seasoned eBayers sugggest is best practice ?

Are you a business seller?

Katinthedoghouse · 07/08/2020 21:00

No. Just selling old clothes and family stuff

Don't refund until you get the item back. I would look at your settings as only business sellers have to except returns normally unless ebay has changed there rules.

According to the eBay pre paid tracking I have it back ( on holiday atm so am assuming the tracking is correct and it’s delivered )

I must have settings to accept returns / buyer pays return postage

My query is...is it better to have ‘no returns’ although I’ve seen so many times in here that that’s useless, especially is buyer specified snad and then I would have to pay return postage as the seller.

Or should I just keep as it is and hope no more returns ?

If your happy to except returns then keep it as is. Like you said you've never really had anyone return anything before.

Depending what sort of things you are selling but I would be wary of allowing returns of technical items e.g. phone, ipad etc. as it seems that not infrequently people return a different item that is often damaged, and because the return is tracked ebay give a refund regardless and you are left with the useless item... Sad

I generally sell with an option to return - but that’s because I sell some quite expensive shoes, clothing and bags most of which have never been used, so I charge quite a bit for them. I want people to feel comfortable paying since they know they can send the item back if it really isn’t right. Never had anything sent back yet. I also always pay postage so that people are more likely to buy and I send everything first class signed for, because I do not want the hassle of items not turning up. Again, that’s because the item value means loss would be extremely annoying (and I don’t want to give anyone the opening to take the piss).

But for your selling of lowish value items, I definitely would not offer returns! It makes the whole thing much more hassle than it’s worth.
