Buyer claiming not received but RM tracking says delivered

My mum was clearing some things out and asked me to sell a few pair of shoes for her so I put them on a low auction bid and all 3 pairs were going to be sent 2nd class delivery and it states this on the ad. So 3 items posted the next day after auction ended, 2 buyers received their shoes no problem but the 3rd messages me 2 weeks later to say she never received her shoes so I sent her the proof of postage that had a reference number on them. I also put in the tracking number on RM website and it says they got delivered on the Saturday ( 5 days after I posted ) before noon and the name of the postman that delivered the shoes. The buyer said she was in and she will check with RM. So I suggested for her to check with neighbours and postman. Fast forward she has now opened a case with EBay and I have defended myself saying that I have done everything from my end. I've told her to put in a claim on RM as either parties can submit a claim but I don't see why I should claim as it says parcel has been sent. She should claim so she can make a declaration and then I mentioned that it isn't possible for me to go knocking on her neighbours doors and asking the postman so she said I was patronising her but I am only stating the facts. I mean how am I really meant to know she didn't receive them. She paid £26 for the shoes. I have never had any buyers claiming they haven't received items before and always sell in an honest, genuine manner. Has anyone had any experience of this or been in a similar situation? What is eBay going to do?

Due to lockdown deliveries are being left outside doors/safe place so it could of ended up at the wrong neighbours. Maybe she has an odd address. I'm not sure but the sender is responsible for the package if it's a retailer, not sure about private sales.

This has happened to mess a buyer. My parcel was apparently delivered last Wednesday. I know it wasn’t.

I don’t know where it is though.

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 00:49

There's a lot of parcels going missing right now. Two just in my small block said 'delivered ' but never showed up. ...

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 28/05/2020 11:59

Make sure you put the tracking number in on the Ebay case. If it says delivered you have done your part. Ebay may refund her themselves but shouldn't force you to :)

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 28/05/2020 12:00

Also, if tracking says delivered, Royal Mail won't pay out.

BeeCatcher · 28/05/2020 12:05

This happened to us as buyers. Postman recorded a parcel as delivered when it wasn't. It was an absolute nightmare but eventually the Ebay seller sent us another item (it was low value consumable). I was furious with Royal Mail as they would not accept the blame.

GU24Mum · 28/05/2020 12:18

Definitely upload the tracking number to Ebay. I've had buyers in the past say that things weren't delivered but when the tracking number is put in suddenly they find them!

cherrytree0 · 28/05/2020 12:55

Thank you for all your replies. I have uploaded the tracking number. It's very funny as usually I have my items recorded but I thought with it being lowish value, I didn't bother this time and my ad said 2nd class mail anyway. Then the buyer is telling me off saying I should have recorded it! I am sorry but one other pair of brand new trainers I sold only sold for £5 so why should I pay for it be recorded? Besides no one I have sent parcels to in the past have lost their mail. If her parcel has been stolen by her neighbours in the block of flat then she could report it to the police.

I have to admit iv had 3 deliveries to my address that wasn’t for me,just knocked an run

EL8888 · 28/05/2020 12:59

I always send things l say recorded for this reason. I would provide the tracking details to eBay and not give it anymore thought

GU24Mum · 28/05/2020 13:46

I didn't realise you hadn't sent it signed for. To be honest, I send everything signed for - if it's not worth it for me to pay for that (or I don't think the listing will bear that level of postage), I either Freecycle it/charity shop it or decide that I'll post normal post and know that I risk having to repay the postage and the item cost. You've asked why you should pay to send it recorded - unfortunately it's because if you don't it's your risk not the buyer's risk.

EL8888 · 28/05/2020 14:20

Aaah l misread it -l thought you had sent it signed for. Personally l list postage and packaging separately so the buyer pays

ChicCroissant · 28/05/2020 14:29

One of my parcels recently went missing in the system for over three weeks before mysteriously turning up! The sender had tracked delivery so I could see it had been posted on the day they said but it didn't say delivered or out for delivery, just disappeared for a few weeks.

IIRC, the seller is responsible for getting the goods to the buyer so the buyer will not claim.

cherrytree0 · 28/05/2020 16:50

I've asked my local post office before and I know that non recorded items have cover up to £20. It states on eBay that 'If a buyer doesn't receive their item, they're entitled to a refund unless you can provide tracking information showing that it was delivered.' Bottom line , I think buyer should claim off Post office as there is an option to do this on RM website. That way RM can investigate properly or check with the postman responsible. If buyer only gets £20 when she paid £26 I will then cough up the £6 myself. I think that's pretty fair. I will wait and see what EBay have to say.

19lottie82 · 28/05/2020 23:00

Even if you didn’t send signed for, as long as it is a small parcel or larger, If you still have the proof of postage, there will be a reference number on it that you can enter on the Royal Mail website, it will confirm if the item has been delivered.

If it has been this will be enough to win an eBay dispute for not received.

cherrytree0 · 05/06/2020 23:57

Just an update. Ebay have refunded the buyer themselves so everything all sorted now Smile

MeridianB · 09/06/2020 19:48

Useful update, OP.

I send everything over £2.50 signed for as there are too many rip-off buyers who pretend something didn’t arrive, quite apart from RM errors. I make a point of highlighting it in the description, too, with the aim of putting off any semi-professional blaggers.
