Selling £1,500 ring on eBay, too risky?

I've got a ring (second-hand) but it's got a valuation of £2k from a jewellers.
I tried to sell it through second hand jewellers, but they aren't interested (and this was before Co-vid).
I've thinking of listing it on eBay, but I'm worried about getting scammed by a buyer and PayPal not supporting me.
If I ever sell anything over £100 then it's usually cash on collection so buyers are happy with the item before they hand over the money, and there's no chance of a refund.
Anyone got any advice? Should I just wait for lockdown to be over and sell it via an auction house, even though I will probably get a lot less for it that way?
Thanks

I think you’ll get a better price from an auction house?

I wouldn’t sell something of that value on eBay, I’d want it properly dealt with.

Too risky if the buyer claims it hasn't turned up etc. I have a few fairly valuable things I was hoping to sell, and we could really use the money now, but I'm too nervous about scammers as I've lost money previously on eBay. I can't afford that at the moment so hoping I can sell in real life (via a reputable reseller) once lockdown is over

I wouldn’t bother trying to sell it on eBay, security risks aside it’s not really the best marketplace for high end jewellery.

Was the 2k value an actual valuation for sale or a replacement valuation for insurance?
If the latter you’re unlikely to get anything like 2k if you sell it...... used jewellery is worth a fraction of what it cost new.

If you’re set on selling it then find a jeweller or an auction house that specialises in jewellery.

If you want to see what similar pieces are selling for on eBay, search for similar items and then filter for completed / sold items, and it will show you what they have actually sold for.

It was valued at about £6k for insurance when new, but obviously not expecting to get anywhere near that, but it's a pretty ring.

You could always do Collect only? Perhaps something social distancing friendly.

You need to be insured if you are sending via post with a reputable courier. As well as that, there is a way you can ban buyers with zero feedback or buyers that do not pay from purchasing your item. You can contact ebay for this

As a buyer, I wouldn't pat cash on collection for 1.5k.

TimetohittheroadJack · 21/04/2020 11:34

I’ve bought expensive rings and stuff on eBay. The buyer videoed themselves packing the box with a security seal and it was a signed for delivery.

I think you will struggle to get a good price at the moment though, I reckon you’d be looking at selling it for 1k max.

Ernieshere · 21/04/2020 11:37

I wouldn't.

This is probably bonkers, but what if they claimed it was 'fake' & tried to get their money back & send you a copy in return?

fedupandlookingforchange · 21/04/2020 11:41

I'd try an auction house and put a reserve on it. Some are holding online auctions at the moment and auctions will be busy when the restrictions are lifted.

I've been selling on eBay for 13 years and agree this would be risky. Ernieshere's suggestion of what could happen isn't all that bonkers - it's really easy for buyers to scam sellers with eBay/PayPal.

Collection only with cash on collection is the only way to be safe when selling high value items on eBay but I'm not sure eBay is the best marketplace for a ring. Try Etsy instead. PayPal is still used on Etsy but it's a different kind of audience and I feel scamming is less likely to happen there. There are lots of rings for sale on Etsy.
