i would it goes up in fifties doesn't it?

fawkeoff · 10/08/2007 19:41

remember the reserve is the least u want for it....if u want to tell them then give them a price that is higher than ur reserve

When DP sold our landrover (listed it as 'missus forces sale!!!!'), people rang up to ask the reserve and he told them. It let them make an informed decision as to whether they wanted to bid or not, and saved them guessing and rebidding.
What can be the harm in telling them? I think you would be more likely to get bids if you are honest with people.
If you tell them a higher price and they bid that, then it will revert to the reserve price so they will KNOW YOU FIBBED.

The first time we sold something (a car) on ebay, we were innundated with emails asking our reserve. We didn't tell them, sent a friendly email back saying sorry but no.

It went for 3 x the reserve!

I asked when we bought a settee. Couldn't be arsed fannying around with bids. It worked and we got it

macmama73 · 10/08/2007 19:51

yes, but you get more of a "bidding war" going if noone knows the reserve. Otherwise they will just wait till the last 5 mins and bid.

I reckon it depends upon what you are selling - I have jsut sold a pram for £2 over my reserve - I told them my reserve as it was £25 more than I would have taken for the pram. I also put up the postage a bit to cover costs. There were loads of the same pram so i knew that if anyone had a limit then they would jsut move onto the next one for sale. I also looked at the completed listings to get an idea of how much they were going for, so new where to pitch my price!

HappyMummyOfOne · 11/08/2007 22:29

I don't sell much so don't use reserve prices. However if I like an item that has a reserve I usually email and ask what it is. Most sellers are happy to tell you, some don't. If they dont, I usually dont bid to be honest.

Theory behind it being I like the buy it now option more as only buy new items but not everybody uses buy it now. Hate waiting for auctions to finish so wouldn't wait a week for an auction to finish and then discover the reserve is more than I wanted to pay.

depends on what? i do often ask or ppl ask, sols claasic car 2yrs ago we had reserve price and buy it now for over 500 pounds, told every1, ppl didnt use buy it now or bid till last minute and we sold it double the amount we wanted. so every1 must regret not using bin price.
