Sorry but i just wanna scream, Ahhhhh! I have already been outbit twice for the book i wanted so this time i sat there for the last 15 minutes of the auction time making sure no one outbid me and then the b*@tard outbid me in the last minute (litrually) giving me no chance to outbid them. It's soooooo frustrating isn't it!

I don't know. I just decide on my maximum bid - say £5 or whatever. Put it in and then leave it to it and if I win I win and if I don't it was more than I was prepared to pay so then I haven't lost have I?

Well that is how I look at it.

sweetcherrypie · 15/07/2007 09:51

the last two times i was outbid by 20p!

My method does work but it can take a while - you just have to be patient.

Now you know what they go for then bid maybe a pound more than you were doing so and you might be able to buy one. Have you tried Amazon?

OggsWartsExpress · 15/07/2007 10:01

Is there a particular recipe you want?

I have a copy, but I don't want to let it go, sorry.

I know you won't want to hear this, but I had a second copy that I gave to a charity shop 2 weeks ago

gringottsgoblin · 15/07/2007 10:08

they might have bid an extra £5 tho, ebay only puts bids up by 20p remember (makes me feel better when it happens to me). look through completed auctions and bid an extra £1 on top of what they end for, or just bid £100 and you are almost certain to get it.

gringottsgoblin · 15/07/2007 10:10

there is one on bin for £5.99

sarahlou1uk · 15/07/2007 11:46

auctionsniper.com or auctionstealer.co.uk

Both these put your last bid in at 5 -8 secs so you stand less chance of getting outbid!

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/07/2007 11:49

CAn you link me a pic of hte bookyou are looking for. I have a cook which has a v similar title which is in a box in the garage waiting to go to the car boot. I would happily sell it if it is the one.

southeastastra · 15/07/2007 11:50

aw my mum got me that book when i first moved in with dp.

place bids in the last 4 seconds, it can be done!

OggsWartsExpress · 15/07/2007 12:58

this is the one I think

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/07/2007 13:59

Thats not the one I have, I am sure there are probably hundreds of "dairy cookery" books....I must have a different one. Sorry.

nomdeplume · 15/07/2007 14:05

I use a sniper tool on ebay to avoid (or reduce) the likelihood of being outbid.

Most seasoned ebayers will not bid until the very last minute (and I mean the very last minute), otherwise if you bid with even 10 minutes to go you are showing your hand, if you like, and people will outbid. There is more chance of the price being bumped up if you bid too early.

The snipe tool I use bids on my behalf between 10 and 20 seconds before auction closure. Some snipers can bid as late as 3 seconds before closure !

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/07/2007 16:20

Yes but some snipe tools are being scuppered by ebays new security measure where you have to copy the numbers/letters in the image file.

If you are a newish ebayer there is an offical tool on ebay that you can use - but I don't think you can use it if your rating is too high.

DoubleBluff · 15/07/2007 16:22

I have that Dary book but would never part form it, sorry as always go back to it.
i usually just put my max bid in from start otherwise you get drawn into a bidding battle and end up paying over the odds sometimes.

winestein · 15/07/2007 16:24

I used to snipe with 3 seconds to go. No one stood a chance if my bid was higher - but that's the thing... you have to bid your maximum amount and not imagine you are in a real life auction. If its listed at 99p and it's worth £5 to you, bid £5

nomdeplume · 15/07/2007 16:25

I only use the snipe tool from my home IP address and I never get caught out by the security verications. I only get those when I ebay from work (on lunch hour !)

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/07/2007 16:26

If it is worth £5 to you - I wuold actually bid £5.06p or something. That way you outbid someone who has bid a nice round figure of £5.00. Quite a lot of people do £5.01, £5.02 & £5.03 for the same reason which is why I add 6p on.

SlightlyMadSpider · 15/07/2007 16:27

Actually I haven't been asked to verify for security for a couple of weeks - is that because it recognises my IP?

nomdeplume · 15/07/2007 16:31

probably, SMS. Ebay deffo doesn't like my work IP

helenhismadwife · 15/07/2007 18:16

I use hammer snipe its free up to 3 uses a week and dont bid whole pounds I tend to bid something like £5.29 instead of £5 its so frustrating to get outbid by pennies

sweetcherrypie · 15/07/2007 19:53

I think they must have done that then because it said 1 minute to go and i pressed refresh and it said i had been outbid and that the auction had ended. I was really gutted because i had been the only bidder.

helenhismadwife · 15/07/2007 20:16

here takes a bit of getting used to but its very good stops me getting carried away as well

teafortwoandtwofortea · 15/07/2007 20:19

Have you tried amazon? - sometimes it's cheaper for books than ebay.

Good luck (I'm one of the evil ones who bids at 10 secs to go - sorry!)
