Selling expensive items on eBay

Ok we all like to make extra cash and I usually do sell a lot of non expensive items on eBAy. I am nervous about selling a more expensive item as friends have been ripped off in the past or buyers start taking the piss or say they haven’t shown up. What is your experience of selling more expensive items or would you just not do it? Trying to sell on local websites and getting a lot of interest but no one taking the final plunge so ebay is my next possibility? I am nervous however!

Just depends on what it is, I sell more expensive things on specific Facebook sites rather than general market place, so if I'm selling some Emma Bridgewater I use a EB selling page.

I would be reluctant for two reasons; firstly scammers and the possibility of losing a lot of money through false 'item didn't arrive' claims or PayPal claims. You could do collection only, cash on collection etc, but it would obviously massively limit your buyers. Secondly, eBay fees are a real sting on more expensive items.
Have you tried Gumtree, Shpock etc?

I guess it depends on how expensive is expensive. We have sold a few around the £200 range with no major problems & actually a sofa and a bike for a bit more. Our stuff is not prime target for rip-off merchants like iPhones or jewellery though which I might be more wary of. You could always try a real auction house although the prices you are likely to get are less than ebay & the sellers fees are as hefty as ebay.

I sell furniture on eBay and do cash on collection only. Limits buyers but is safer for me (and them).

What are we talking about?

Can you sell it on a local Facebook selling site, or schpoxk, or a specialist site?

I have sold some gold jewellery on ebay and never had any problems. Maximum I got for one item was £420, is this the sort of thing you mean?
I got buyers to pay through paypal and obviously sent everything signed for and insured. Ebay sometimes do deals where maximum fees are £1 so it helps if you look out for those.

I have sold loads of EB for up to £800 an item and never had any issues. You wont get the best price on FB.

I have sold 4 saddles on eBay - best place to sell a used saddle IMO. I get around £5-600. I use Royal Mail/ Parcel Force with tracking. The saddles usually get bought by people who live in the back of beyond & cannot buy easily. A fairly specialist market. I only ever had one awkward purchaser, but that got sorted. Really important to describe accurately & describe any flaws, etc.
