Ebay issued refund after no response from seller. Now aggressively demanding collection

I bought a tent. Supposed to be good condition. It was mouldy, covered in yellow/green slime.

I contacted seller, who was dismissive. I even said I wasn't accusing seller of being aware, but tent was unusable.

I requested refund and waited 8 days. No response. I escalated to ebay. After 48 hrs they ruled in my favour and issued a postage label. Unfortunately this was for a max of 2kg, and tent is 20kg.

So ebay asked for 5 days to get seller to provide more postage/courier. Still no response.

After 6 days ebay issued refund due to no response. Within an hour seller messages asking when I would deliver the tent! I replied stating needed to provide postage and that case had now been closed.

Seller sends more aggressive email, saying I've got my money now I need to give back the tent. Demanded my address to collect.

I have no use for the tent, it is unusable. I was happy to return, just wanted my refund. But I'm not happy about the seller's tone and about giving my address.

Ebay have said I don't have to, because they've closed case.

Any advice?

Forget about it.

Report them for abuse and Ignore them. If they wanted it back they should have responded to the case.
Do they not have your address already from sending it you in the first place?

SalveGrumio · 05/09/2018 21:49

@wildewillow it was collection as so big and heavy.

Thanks. I've reported the abuse already. I'll ignore.

Ignore. Do not engage. Do not send any messages or give any details. Ebay have closed the case. If seller doesn't like it they can pursue ebay.

ToadOfSadness · 06/09/2018 11:28

As it was collection is there any way you could dump it back outside their house/business as you will presumably be wanting to dump it anyway if it is not useable?

Or can it be cleaned up and used with some effort?

Did you pay PayPal if you got your refund via PayPal? If so I thought it sent your address anyway on the payment?

Tbh I can understand why she is annoyed if you have the item and she's lost the money too.
Contact ebay but I would be tempted to drop it off at hers if it wasn't far.

But she could have sorted it out 2 weeks ago. I've always been happy to return it for a refund. She's ignored it and left me in a stressful situation - no tent to away with my kids.

I didn't think that with PayPal. Yes she presumably does have my address.

I object to her tone "you've got your money now" like I've somehow scammed her.

It's not salvageable. The green slime doesn't wash off and mould is almost impossible to clean off a tent without damaging the waterproofing. And it stinks of mould.

I'm actually a bit worried she might sell it again, this time cash and catch out someone else.

It's a 30 min drive away.

I really don't see why you should make two trips to pick up and drop off a mouldy tent, plus the time you've waited for your money back, and having to presumably find another tent. I think the seller should pay for postage if she desperately wants it back, she should have responded ages ago. If it was listed as pick up only I don't think she'd have your address.

wildewillow · 06/09/2018 12:14

I would check with PayPal if she has your address though as I once bought a sofa on eBay and the seller turned up at my house before I had paid for it asking when I was going to collect it. I think your address is on most PayPal transactions unfortunately.

SalveGrumio · 06/09/2018 12:20

I think I just don't want the confrontation with her. I'm not holding on to it for any particular reason. The tent fabric I would take to the tip. The poles I would offer (for free) on a camping group for repairs.

^To be fair I don’t blame her. I know several sellers who have been scammed like this.

SalveGrumio · 06/09/2018 12:26

But I sent her a message the same evening I collected. I sent numerous photos.

If she'd said sorry, bring it back, I would have. When I sent a message saying that I wasn't accusing her of knowing about the mould, but I needed a tent to take my kids away. And that without her refund I couldn't buy another one, she ignored me.
