I bought a dress BNWT but the neck label is missing

I want to return it as not as described. The labels and spare crystals which are attached with a safety pin are there, but the one sewn in the back at the neck has been removed. This is a £235 dress and was to be for my wedding. I don't want it if it has been worn, and I can't trust that it hasn't - it's a lace dress so you would have to unpick the (black) tag to wear it.

I know they come with a black tag in the neckline because I had one from the actual shop 2 weeks ago which was too small, and they are now sold out.

I can't think of any other reason someone would unpick the label, it's not as described is it?

Also the seller is not in this country and eBay says the seller can't send me a returns label, is that usual?

This is the first time I've bought from eBay!

They usually take the label out if the dress is cheaper than being sold in the shop so you can’t return it for a credit note. I think it’s fairly standard practice go ex shop stock?

bookbuddy · 02/07/2018 19:28

It’s normal, to stop shop returns.

Kleptronic · 02/07/2018 19:36

Right so everyone knows it's normal but clearly not me, never having done this before. Shouldn't it have said that then? The description was 'Dress is brand new and never been worn AND HAVIBG TAGS ATTACHED • RETURN TAG IS ATTACHED
' [sic]

No mention of anything having been removed?

Were you planning on returning it to the shop for a 'refund'? I can't understand why it's bothering you that much, you would have to remove it anyway Confused

You know now why they take the tag off, do you still want to send it back?

AmazingPostVoices · 02/07/2018 19:43

I’ve bought dresses in sales which have the label removed or cut through.

Kleptronic · 02/07/2018 19:45

I think it's not BNWT is my problem.

I don't see how it can be taken to a shop without a receipt, but no, no intention of doing that at all.

It’s normal Confused

19lottie82 · 02/07/2018 19:45

As above it’s pretty standard. Is it really a big deal?

Kleptronic · 02/07/2018 19:48

Yes it is a big deal, to me. It's supposed to be my wedding dress, I didn't know this was common practice. Now I do, cheers for that.

If everyone knows and it's all totally fine the seller will have no trouble finding another buyer.

What does bnwt mean

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/07/2018 19:50

If you’re going to be that weird about it then buy one from a shop.

tenbob · 02/07/2018 19:55

Bnwt = brand new with tags

Ie a second hand item that hasn't been worn

Oddcat · 02/07/2018 19:55

It doesn't mean that it's second hand and has been worn .

Worieddd · 02/07/2018 19:58

But it is brand new with tags? It came with tags didn’t it?

Bombardier25966 · 02/07/2018 20:01

If you're that fixated on having something exactly as if you bought it from a shop, then buy it from a shop.

If you're going to be difficult (and you are), how do you even know it is not fake?

Or you could just accept that you have a lovely dress and no one else is going to know (or care) about a piffly missing label.

(Hint: the last option is the best. Chill out.)

Dumbledoresgirl · 02/07/2018 20:02

Even if it was straight out of the shop, you do realise someone may well have tried it on before you? It doesn't sound as though it has been worn, as in worn for a day, otherwise you would be complaining about the marks or creases, or some other indication of wear. If it is just a tag, which may have been taken out by the shop, and there are other tags on it, I don't think the seller has misrepresented the condition of the dress.

If you love it so much to chase around for another size, why not keep it and wear it? If you can't bear to wear it, lie and say it doesn't fit you or something. Don't make the seller feel bad for doing nothing wrong.

Kleptronic · 02/07/2018 20:03

It came with the spare crystals and one of the tags has been removed. The one you would have to remove to wear it.

I get that you're all ok with it and I thank you all for the information.

Why does it matter? Is it in as new condition? Is it stained, torn, the wrong size etc.?

bruffin · 02/07/2018 20:08

I bought some Next dresses and an m&s in a local shop with the label picked cut out. They are seconds but new.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 02/07/2018 20:20

I understand why it’s important to you that it hasn’t been worn and because the label has been removed you don’t trust that it hasn’t been worn. Pinning ‘tags’ back on with a safety and claiming bnwt is easy. It might genuinely be bnwt or it might not be but as a seller with over 4K items sold, I would never list something without making it clear that the label has been removed and why. So you are quite right to say it isn’t as described. It might be to prevent shop returns, but most eBay shops that do that make it very clear. I’ve sold items of DDs that are brand new and unworn but where she has (annoyingly) already removed the label even if the shop ‘tags’ are still present (she has a real problem with itchy labels!). I always clrearly state this. It should have definitely had this in the description afaiac.

SassitudeandSparkle · 02/07/2018 20:24

Agree with PP that labels are sometimes cut out or defaced if stock is sold on (by the original manufacturer) to a third party to stop returns - sometimes people buy job lots of clothes to sell on eBay and I have seen descriptions that say the tag has been cut/whatever to prevent store returns.

Probably would have been helpful for the description to have stated this, have you spoken to the seller?

Kleptronic · 02/07/2018 20:38

Thanks Judas I'm glad someone can see where I'm coming from.

I've spoken to the seller and she will refund although is of the opinion it is properly described.

I now know that BNWT means Brand New With Tags Removed.

gekiort · 02/07/2018 20:55

You are confusing tags with labels me thinks

GorgonLondon · 02/07/2018 21:04

I still don't understand why it matters if the condition is fine?

slovenlys · 02/07/2018 21:18

Yes. Tags and labels are different. Yours came with tags but no label so it was officially BNWT
