Buyer bought dress in May (25th). Got in touch today to say it was marked and could they have a refund.

It's a dressy dress so I'm wondering if they've worn it and are pulling a fast one!

The ebay 30 day rule applies from the latest date of the delivery estimate so depending on the service used / dispatch time, the buyer could still be in a window to open an eBay case. And they still have 180 days from the sale date to open a PayPal case.

OP - has the buyer opened a case or just sent an informal message?

If the former then yes, you will have to refund (and pay for a return label if you want the dress back).

If they haven’t gone down the case route yet, then it’s really up to you, but bare in mind they can still open a case and have the option to leave negative FB.

Maybe ask for a photo of the mark?

They've not opened a case just a request. They've sent a blurry photo of the mark.

Yes, sorry a request is a case (they just changed the name so it doesn’t sound as threatening!).

Look at the sales record, what’s the latest date on the delivery estimate?

Or it may be simpler to list the options ebay give you when you open the return request. If there isn’t one for “refuse return” (or something similar, then they are within the time frame for a not as described return and effectively, you have to accept it. If not ebay will force it through anyway and you will get a defect on your account and an increased risk of negative feedback.

Sorry, they've just sent a message asking for a refund. Not a proper request.

Ah OK, apologies for the crosses wires. Ebay used to call it a “case” but now it’s called a “return request”.

If it’s just a message at this stage rather than a formal “return request” through eBay’s resolution Centre, my advice above (12:32) still stands.
