that there was a concensus that it was, more than likely, Arthur Sullivans, I've given up trying to find out if it's authentic or not - it's just going to take too long/cost too much money (Wellingborough not a good place to live if you have something that could be of value that isn't furniture LOL). So I've relisted it on ebay - with a reserve of £50 (if it reaches that I'll be happy TBH - anything more would be a bonus) and a starting price of £15 - made it clear (I hope) in the listing that I don't have any 'proof' of it being a very early edition or the 'real' signature but put quite a few pictures so hopefully anyone that knows their stuff and is interested will be able to figure it out from there.

Now I just need to sit back and see if it gets any interest/enough bids to sell LOL.

hi fannyannie live near you and would agree w/boro not a great place to sell something like that! hope you raise lots of cash on e bay good luck

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 13:49

lol fizzledizzle - never mind sell it - just trying to find out more about it has proved fruitless - local 2nd hand book shop (where I started out just to try and get the damn book dated) asked me "does it have a date on it"...........of course my response was "ermmm no that's why I came in here" LOL.

NutterlyUts · 15/05/2007 13:52

Good Luck!! Hope it sells for a lot more then £50 for you

fizzledizzle · 15/05/2007 13:53

the 2nd hand book shop is the only one we have now isnt it? obviously not a lot of intellectual types by us.

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 14:01

thanks Nutterly - tbh I'm not really too bothered how much it goes for - didn't cost me anything in the first place - and if that bloke hadn't asked me when it was published it would probably have sold for the £2 original listing price

I'll certainly keep you update though

  • some people are so rude.......got this message about my listing

"It's obviously a stamp not Sullivan's actual signature and anyone who claims, or even suggests, otherwise should be ashamed."

I've sent a 'polite' reply back (not rude honest) asking how he's so certain without actually 'seeing' it and pointing out that I'd made it clear in my listing I was unable to ascertain it was genuine.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2007 19:53

You've missed an i out of responsibility in "I accept no responsbility"

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 19:55

ooops - should have spellchecked it if I was going to show MN English Scholars

FrannyandZooey · 15/05/2007 19:56

FA if this was me I would really hold on until I could get it verified or otherwise - don't you think it could be worth a lot more if it is genuine? I don't think you can sell it for its full worth without having it authenticated, and of course if it is NOT genuine then you would not want to mislead anyone.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2007 19:57

Oh, I'm utterly cr*p at typing/spelling I just have a very good knack of spotting typos in other people's stuff!! Can't spot them in my own for love nor money mind you.

Carmenere · 15/05/2007 19:58

The rude person may be trying to unnerve you to get it at a cheap price.

charliecat · 15/05/2007 19:59

Link to auction? Missed first thread

3andnomore · 15/05/2007 20:00

Wow, you lot are in Wellingborough....that is so near me
Sorry, totally off topic....lol....just so happy to see there are mumsnetters nearby (And if you think Wellingborough is a bad place to live, you have obviously not been to Corby.....yes that si where I am, lol)

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 20:00

F&Z if it's not genuine I've made it clear in my listing (I hope) that I'm not sure that it's genuine - so really "buyer beware" - and I can't see it being worth much more than £50ish - looking at how much other signed stuff (with a COA) have gone for.....

Thing is it's going to cost me money to try and get it verified, either that or a LOT of time - and TBH with DC3 imminent I'd rather it went for peanuts than still be sat cluttering up my desk in 6 months time.

Lets not forget I nearly sold it for £2

Carmenere - do you think so?? I thought they just sounded like a rude person

OP posts:
fannyannie · 15/05/2007 20:03

mind you at least he's only questioned the signature not the age LOL.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/05/2007 20:06

I think you've been clear and honest in the description wrt the fact that you can't be sure it's genuine.

I would have thought it would be obvious if it were a stamp though - have you looked at it through a strong magnifying glass? that's not to say it wasn't signed in pen by someone else, obviously.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/05/2007 20:08

I don't see why it wouldn't be genuine - I'm sure he would have autographed loads of scores.
And sure a G&S freak would have loved to buy one.

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 20:18

SD - I'm not sure if we own a magnifying glass LOL. But if we do - how would I tell????

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/05/2007 20:24

You couldn't tell for sure but something signed with a fountain pen would look quite different to something stamped with an ink pad and a rubber stamp. A pen would produce a more natural look, shading where the ink has perhaps pooled at the bottom of the letters when wet or paler in places where it's not flowed so well where the pen moved quicker, edges would be sharper (especially any thin lines), maybe the nib wil have flicke dup some paper fibres. I think a stamp would perhaps be more uniform in colour and less refined.

(spot the many typos in that!!) I'm not an experc in autographes but I did do calligraphy for a long time so have an inkling (haha!) of how pen and ink looks. It would just be a gut feeling.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2007 20:25

I don't think I should have used "obvious" in my original post. It would always be just a gut feeling I think.

cece · 15/05/2007 20:33

I am now watching your item - want to see how you get on!

fannyannie · 15/05/2007 20:40

well I guess only time will tell as to whether others think it's a stamp/fake/real/whatever - only 6 1/2 days to go LOL.

OP posts:
fannyannie · 16/05/2007 12:00

oh well - looks like it's not his signature - got a (much nicer and friendlier) question from someone this morning, who I've googled and he's the curator of G&S stuff so knows what he's talking about) telling me that indeed it is a stamp which was used on all of books sold in Sullivans Life time......ahh well - off to edit my listing shortly........ have to get some more stuff listed if I want to make some money LOL.
