Right I am in dispute with an ebayer regarding the postage payment. Basicaly he says I have not paid any postage on an item and he has had to pay it his end.

Right I have called royal mail customer services.

They cannot tell me whether a surcharge (i.e. underpayment by myself) has been applied. What they have told is this:

A postman would not attempt delivery if a surcharge for underpayment had been applied. A postman would have delivered a "fee to pay" card asking the recipient to collect the parcel from his postoffice/sorting office, after payment of surcharge. Alternatively if he doesn't collect it will be returned to me free of charge. He has collected and apparently paid the full postage on teh item.

This is the response I plan:

"Dear pillock,

Having contacted royal mail customer services, who have stated that a recorded delivery article must be paid for at point of dispatch [little white lie here]. They question whether a surcharge has been applied as a result of a weighing discrepancy, but that in this case teh postman would not have attempted delivery, he would have left a "fee to pay" card. In order for me to persue this with my local post office I need evidence that you have had what royal mail are terming a "surcharge" applied. Could you please send me a copy of the "fee to pay" card that the postman left, and your receipt for the payment. I may also need the original documents at a later date. With both of these I shall take my claim to my local post office with respect to their ability to correctly weigh parcels.

Lots of love and kisses SMS xxx"

What do you think. Does it sound as tho I am giving in? If he can provide evidence I will meet him half way. But the phone call and the information he has iven me lead me to think he is bullshitting me. I am not paying him anything w/o evidence he has paid anything.

£3.62 appears to be packet 751g - 100g @£2.92 + 70 rec del charge.

Didn't he say there was a rec del sticker on and no stamps? if so, why are they charging him for the rec del?

I'd pop along to the ebay forums and ask a few questions. Do they know if there is a surcharge for insufficient postage and how much? What stickers would be on parcel etc etc.

If it still sounds too suspicious I'd send a final message along the lines of - It would seem you have sent me a copy of the incorrect receipt by mistake. Could you please forward copies of all receipts, documentation and a scan of the packaging. This has gone on too long and is taking up too much of our time. I would like this issue resolved very soon.

How are you going on with this? any news?

I asked at my post office about this today and he told me that yes, there is a £1 charge. Therefore this means that the postage cost would have been £1.92. This is the cost of 2nd class packet 501-750g.
At first I thought we had him but i was looking at first class postage

Hi,

I have spoken at length with another customer services operator AND supervisor today - and they thought the story quite amusing. Basically they agreee with me on the following basis
a) they can't possibly calculate a fee of £3.62 including £1 charge. They get £3.30 for a approx 800g parcel, second class (which is standard for underpaid items) - which is £1.00 admin + £2.30. They agree it sounds like he has dispatched a parcel 751-1000g recorded as you say below.
b) if it was underweighed no-one would ever know - as parcls are not weighed again - only at point of despatch.
c) Recorded delivery sticker is evidence of payment - and as item was tracked if deffo had sticker - and no further charges could be applied because of b)
d) most significantly using the tracking system the delivery is shown to have incurred no additonal charges.

This is the mail I will send as soon as SIL has proof read it:

Hi,

Unfortunately my sister has been unable to get to the post office as yet. I have been trying to understand where the charges detailed on your receipt originate. I could not get them to add up to any royal mail postal product, including the ?fee to pay? administration charge. As I didn?t want this to drag on for any longer I contacted Royal Mail by telephone and asked for further advice regarding the charges you incurred and how they would have been broken down in this instance. They were in agreement with me - it was not possible to incur such a fee of £3.62. Furthermore, the fact that the item has a tracking label applied for the recorded delivery is evidence that the postage has been paid. As parcels submitted at a post office are only weighed once - at point of dispatch - there would never be any charges applied after dispatch, pertaining to the normal delivery of an item.
At this point I was referred to a supervisor, who not only reiterated all of the above - but was able to provide me further information from their tracking system regarding this specific package. In this instance the outcome code was logged as 001C, representing a ?normal delivery?. Had there been further charges to pay before the parcel could be delivered the code 997 would have been logged on the system.

As I am sure you can appreciate, this has taken a significant amount of my time effort and cost involved in calling Royal Mail. I am not prepared to pursue this any further as I think it is clear that you appear to have been trying to deceive me regarding the costs that you have incurred. If, by some chance this is not the case I suggest you pursue a claim with your local post office, giving them the information I have detailed above.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me - otherwise I will assume that you are happy with the outcome of this dispute.

Many thanks for all your advice - it was really helpful to have someone re-iterating what I was thinking - and that I wasn't going mad. Will of course let you know his response if there is one.

misdee · 03/05/2007 21:42

well done!

he really does seem ot be trying it on doesnt he.

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 03/05/2007 21:45

HAve yet to send the mail - his repsonse - or lack of response will be interesting.

I was toying with telling him that SIL is a civilian in the police force with the equivalent rank as Insepctor....wonder what he will say about that.

misdee · 03/05/2007 21:46

is she? lol.

i would send it. if he engs you, then leave a comment beneath it.

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 03/05/2007 21:50

Yup....

Does the E-mail sound OK and balanced but that I am annoyed...

sixlostmonkeys · 03/05/2007 22:03

email sounds great.

please don't say your sil is in the police lol - you wouldn't believe how many ebayers claim this

MrsWho · 03/05/2007 22:09

What a PIA if he gets shirty again t tell him about SIL!

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 03/05/2007 22:10

Right MR Ebayer - if you are a MNetter piss off.

Within 2 mins of posting that letter below DP had this in his inbox (its his ebay account)

Hi, Sorry I've not had time to properly contact you about this but I've
been away from home 2 nights this week. I really do appreciate the
trouble you're going to regards this matter but is it worth it. lets
just forget it. We're not going to get any money out them, they'll
probably say that receipt could have been for anything since there's no
ref number on it. Let's just put it down to expereince.

Guilty conscience or what.

Dp won't let me send e-mail now (an he is probably right - protec feedback and all).

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 03/05/2007 22:13

Wonder how long it will be before he complains about the phone (item I sold)???

Anyone want to start a sweepstake?

willywonka · 03/05/2007 22:15

Really sorry, haven't read through the whole thread, but I had to deal with underpaid postage on an ebay item a few weeks ago and occasionally on stuff for work too.

If he's incurred any sort of surcharge, there'll be a sticker on the outside of your parcel detailing the underpayment & the £1 handling fee. If he's above board, he would surely not have thrown this away? I didn't even unwrap my bloody parcel until it was sorted (which, in fact, was the fault of the Royal Mail rather than the seller). HTH

divamumplusbump · 03/05/2007 22:28

it happened to me. sold clothes to mner, and she said she had note from local po that she must pay and collect her parcel. she wasnt happy, but i had a proof of postage. i went our po and they refunded me, obviously lovely mner sent me the receipt she had. i and po thinks the postage sticker is somehow removed, probably not put right i dont know.
anyway things like that happens. in case your buyer is right.

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 03/05/2007 22:31

My buyer has all but admitted he is trying to pull a fast one...and the PO have confirmed that there has bene no extra paid on this particular parcel.

willywonka · 04/05/2007 09:52

Pisses me off when people do that cos it undermines the core principal on which ebay was built, i.e. that most people are fundamentally honest. Glad it's sorted but you've had the hassle.

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 04/05/2007 18:22

Conclusion, I think, for those that are interested
