OK. Heres the story, sorry its a bit long..

LIsting an item for SIL, but forgot to change item location to her postcode (small item, to be posted didn't think I needed to TBH).

WIns auction Sun night. E-mails to ask if he can collect it on Tues night as he will be passing (is not local). Has not asked prior to bidding if he can collect. There is no indication in the listing that we will 'accept' collection. He has assumed he can collect it at a specific time.
We reply explaining we don't have the item locally, and would not be in on Tues evening anyway.

He says he wants to collect as he has no funds in paypal until Thurs, but would pay cash on collection. We offer him the option of paying within 6 days by paypal (after his next auction ends to provide funds; or refund on an identical phone which was not as described), or collect after Weds(when SIL will have posted item to us)

Funds appear Fri am, item posted Sat am (as we didn't get payment message until after work Fri).

Tues he e-mails asking if we posted as he hasn't received. We reply saying yes, give it until Thurs, if not arrived we would chase Royal Mail

Postal tracking confirms attempted delivery Weds am. He e-mails to say postman tried to deliver something, would not be able to get to post office until Sat

He has e-mailed today with the following message "Hi, did you pay the postage because I'm not happy having to pay it to you and pay it at this end."

Have you ever heard of being able to post a recorded delivery parcel without payment FFS? Of course it was payed for.

Any suggestions as to how to procede? Currently getting he a copy of the postal slips e-mailed.

DOes nayone think he is just being difficult just cos he couldn't collect?

ignore him

munz · 28/04/2007 21:49

I think h'es being difficult - if you didn't add anything to the box after you paid the postage there should be no problems - you can't send a recorded parcel without paying the right postage.

do you have a reciept etc for postage? get on to RM and find out if you can what's gone on at the depo have all the facts before talking to him again.

fuzzywuzzy · 28/04/2007 21:49

remain polite, repeat to him that you sent the item recorded delivery, so it has been paid, and hence you could track it...then block him from any future auctions.... Yes I think he may be a little peeved at being unable ot collect, but you hadn't said he could in the description when he bid so tough...

2cheekymonkeys · 28/04/2007 21:51

He's just being an arse. Ignore him. if he wasn't in when the postman called that's not your fault.

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 28/04/2007 21:52

Do you see negative feedback coming?

overtherainbow · 28/04/2007 22:42

I believe that if you want something delivered to your post office instead of collecting it from the sorting office (after a failed delivery attempt to your address) you have to pay a nominal fee ie:50p - that is his choice he could have waited to have it delivered again. If that makes sense??

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 28/04/2007 22:47

Hmmm maybe. I have never had to pay to collect form my post-office. It is wear undelivered mail automatically goes where I livebut appreciate that there may be variability in local arrangements.

ScoobyDooooo · 28/04/2007 22:52

He is being a pratt, he is miffed because he had to pay the postage in the end because he assumed he could just collect, he is now trying to get a refund on the postage he did not want to pay in the first place.

I would just tell him politly you have the proof end of story!

MrsWho · 28/04/2007 23:30

You only pay if its your local PO rather than the sorting office one.I have a choice of 50 p to the one at the end of my street or free from the one in town.

chilledmama · 28/04/2007 23:37

He sounds completely mad! Do what you have to do and never contact him again...if he bids on any further items of youd I would avoid him...he wanted to come to your house and pay you cash...how dodgy is that!!!

sixlostmonkeys · 29/04/2007 09:16

Is he new to ebay? It sounds like he doesn't understand how it all works.

you have the tracking info therefore you have nothing to worry about should he demand a refund.

I'd send him a simple message along the lines of - We can confirm that your item was despatched on d/at/e using royal mail recorded delivery service. An attempt to deliver your item was unsucessful on d/at/e and your parcel will now be at your local sorting office. The card left by the postman should indicate the times you can collect and the proof of ID required. No payment will be required to collect your parcel. We hope you enjoy your xitemx and we thank you for your business.

Then add him to your blocked buyers list

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 16:29

No he is not new to ebay...he knows the system. I think he is trying to get me to refund his postage which he didn't want to pay. He has the item - he has collected it.

The more I think about it, the more I also think that he may have wanted to 'view' the item before paying IYSWIM as he openly declared that he is waiting a paypal refund on the same model phone which he was not satisfied with.

So we are agreed that no-one has ever heard of being able to post a recorded delivery item without posting. It is not as if you can put it in a postbox with no stamp is it?

OP posts:
sixlostmonkeys · 29/04/2007 18:09

you wouldn't get a tracking number unless you handed over the proper pennies

hang on to the tracking number - that's all paypal will need to settle in your favour should he try and claim a refund.

keep us posted

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 21:23

We have a photo of the tracking slip. We have offered to send the original tracking slip to him if he needs it to chase royal mail.

Should we hang on to this?

OP posts:
sixlostmonkeys · 29/04/2007 22:29

yes, hang on to it.
he has no need for it.
If he takes up a dispute you just give the info to paypal.

If he gets funny I'd just keep it simple and to the point. You can tell him the tracking number so that he can check online, but I'd just send him factual replies with instructions on how to collect his parcel

try not to worry - and don't leave him feedback until he has left it for you

sixlostmonkeys · 29/04/2007 22:31

oh, I forgot - he doesn't need to chase royal mail - that is the seller's responsibilty - hense you keep all the slips.

If you have looked it up and it states a delivery has been attempted then it's up to him now - he will have the card that the postie left - and once you assure him that all postage has been paid he should just go and collect it

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 22:31

He has already collected his parcel. He has apparently had to pay the postage at his end.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 22:32

So should we check with royal mail if he has had to pay extra?

OP posts:
PuppyDogsTails · 29/04/2007 22:37

Did you list postage costs when you listed the item?

SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 22:49

POstage costs were listed. Item has been posted. POstage paid by SIL - weighed at post office and paid for 1st class recorded.

He has apparently had to pay the postage at his end

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSuperhero · 29/04/2007 22:50

He has not stated how much he has actually had to pay. That will be the next thing we ask him if he bothers to get back in contact
