Annoying buyer 😬

I'm a bit tired and stressed so may be overreacting but...
I sold an item for a lot more than I thought it would get - about £70 . I quoted 1st class postage at £3.99. Sent the item off.

Now the buyer is saying given the amount involved I should have sent it signed for, signed for second class is £3.99. I pointed out they should have checked and asked for it.

Now they're saying if it doesn't turn up I'll need to refund, they're just thinking of me, surprised I didn't send it signed for, unscrupulous people yada yada...

I've Ebayed a lot longer than this buyer and have only positive feedback. I feel quite stressed and annoyed by this.

I posted it late on Monday and it's not there yet.

Any advice/thoughts? Thanks . 😊

Although you are free to use whichever delivery service you want, if you don't use one having a “Proof of delivery” then you don't qualify for ebay's seller protection. This can be very handy if a buyer claims not to have received an item. In this way there's actually some truth in what the buyer is saying.

Without “Proof of delivery” the only thing you can rely on is the honesty of buyers. Any buyer who receives an item from you and then claims not would have you over a barrel.

Fingers crossed it arrives and the buyer is honest. If the buyer says the item hasn't arrived then you will have to accept this and refund. The only thing you could then do would be to use any proof of posting you received from the Post Office to claim compensation of £20 maximum from Royal Mail.

I'm sorry. Hopefully they are just a moaner & not a ConArtist. :(

RosieLig · 27/09/2017 21:17

Yes just thinking it's a great scam to bid high on something that's not signed for and then say it hasn't arrived. Fingers crossed it's not the case here. She just seemed suspiciously clued up for someone with only 30 or so feedback. Straight away asked me for a tracking number - that was odd. Oh God. :-(

If it didn't go as large letter (doesn't fit through a letter box) parcels automatically get a reference number. This is like tracking, but not exactly. It lets you know if it has been delivered to their house or neighbour. Check the receipt and upload this reference number immediately against the tracking info on eBay.
Why on Earth would you not send it signed for? For the extra £1 it is worth it, because if you don't have this reference number (not even sure if eBay even use it as proof of delivery) then they will 100% get refunded. It's common sense to send it on your own accord signed for, even if they say no. It covers your arse. You are a scammers dream seller.

ImaLannister · 28/09/2017 00:17

Anything £10+ I send signed for. £70 defo send signed for! 😲
Once you send something signed for and they receive it you can not get scammed.

19lottie82 · 28/09/2017 07:18

But silly not sending it signed for when it was worth £70!
If the buyer says it doesn't show up then you will have to refund unfortunately, just make sure they open a case first as this puts a lot of
Would be scammers off.

RosieLig · 28/09/2017 07:46

Thanks all! Annoyed at myself really. I don't normally sell such expensive items and was in a rush so just didn't think :-(

If you sent it first class Late Monday it would have left Tuesday probably as you might have missed last post Monday. So it should have arrived yesterday really. I hope she's a honest buyer for you.

Shellshocked44 · 28/09/2017 12:40

That's terrible op have you got proof of postage royal mail are rolling out the 2d barcode your receipt should have a 16 digit reference number I have read some where on the net that ebay does take this as proof of delivery if she happens to open a case

SandyDenny · 28/09/2017 13:01

I hope it turns up, it's an expensive lesson if it doesn't, but you know that now.

RosieLig · 29/09/2017 11:56

You won't believe what's happened!! The parcel turned up at my house yesterday. It looks like the address label came off and luckily I was using recycled packaging and my own address was on a label underneath!

Anyway I resent it first class signed for today. Lesson learnt!! The buyer was good humoured about it. A lucky escape for me I think!

Thanks for all your help.

Wow, that's a great outcome, well done to the post office Smile

nauticant · 29/09/2017 13:47

Excellent! Great to hear also that the buyer seems like a nice sort.

Nice to go into the weekend without worrying about this.

19lottie82 · 29/09/2017 15:28

Good outcome OP.

Everyone please take this as a warning that if you sell anything over £20 then always send it with a proof of delivery!

flutterby12 · 29/09/2017 16:00

I sold a Chloe bag on eBay and send it first class but not signed for. The buyer said it didn't turn up and they opened up a disputed with PayPal. Lesson well and truly learnt. Absolutely devastated.

flutterby12 · 29/09/2017 16:01

*sent

FridayFreddo · 29/09/2017 16:03

With anything over £20, spend more on postage to make sure it's tracked. Second class postage only pays out compensation of £20.

Many cheap couriers will do tracked for less than Royal Mail.

Hope it arrives.

FridayFreddo · 29/09/2017 16:04

Oops, cross-post and epic fail! Glad it turned up Grin

ImaLannister · 30/09/2017 05:28

My Gosh OP - 😱😇👼 Ebay Gods were defo looking out for you! To turn up like that on your doorstep because the label came off is crazy coincidence good!
Now, anything expensive send signed for! There are too many scammers out there to try to do us over. At least by covering yourself you can't go wrong.
A good service I use for packages over 2kg is Collect + They are loads cheaper than Royal Mail for 2kg +. Below 2kg Royal Mail is great to send parcels with, as it's cheap.
