I had an item on ebay for collection only. Someone asked if I could post it, and because I am stupid and wanted to help I said yes.
They won, I got a quote for the delivery, they paid, all fine.
I took it to the drop off place and the item was delivered a couple of days later.
Hermes is now saying that the item exceeded the size dimensions and has invoiced me an extra £10.80!!

I am invoicing the buyer for the extra charges, but of course, I doubt they will pay.
Is there anything I can do about this?
I have complained to Hermes. Had they said before hand that there were extra charges we could have dealt with the situation differently, but now I am stuck, because the item was delivered!

Can they do this? Can they charge extra without asking first?

Sympathies, I sell a lot online and it's tricky to get right.

I think you're stuffed, sorry, and buyer shouldn't pay. Your responsibility to measure the parcel correctly, not the fault of courier to check at pick up. Maybe buyer will take pity & cough up.

Thanks lijkk but how is not (partly) the fault of the courier?
Ebay support seemed to think they were wrong for not asking if we really wanted the item delivered at that price

MyHermes and other couriers T&C: say it is your responsibility to get the parcel size & weight correct before handing it over to their agents. You can ask around for more opinions, like on Ebay discussion boards, but I don't think anyone will say otherwise.

Are the sure the parcel was the correct size / weight? Did you measure / weigh it, or just guess?

Ask them for evidence thst it was over size. Say you checked, in accordance with their terms and conditions, and it was fine so you want unequivocal proof from them that it was wrong.
As they've already delivered I'd be surprised if they can provide evidence.

I'd then send in writing that you are refusing To pay as you dispute their claim and they need to prove they are invoicing you for a service they actually provided.

I'd be surprised if they took it further tbh.

I did measure it and it was 118 x 80 x 20

They say that is has to be less than 120 cm and less than a combined measurement of 245 cm. However, this is calculated in a very strange way = (80 + 20) x2 x 118
Does anyone know that?!

So, yes the parcel was oversized - but what I still cannot get my head around is why they delivered and claimed the money after?!
