ebay and paypal - someone else using my account....

I've got an ebay and paypal account - which I basically never use. the other day I received in my hotmail 4 or 5 emails from an ebay user. they were essentially from a company trying to persuade me to buy something or other. I reported them - I think. Now I've had emails from both ebay and paypal saying someone has had access to my accounts so they have put stops on them until I reactivate them. I reactiviated the ebay account and then sent a request to close it. I tried to reactiviate the paypal account but it didn;t work as my address had been changed to warwickshire and didn't match my phone number. so they're going to ask me to do it in writing....by sending me something through the post to...erm....warwickshire. nightmare. (postcode's correct so maybe I'll get it). I've got so many emails - from ebay and paypal that I can barely make sense of, including one about an email I allegedly sent to or received from another user when I did not such thing.

The other weird thing is - when I tried to log on it defaulted to my nanny's ebay user name. Now I trust her 100 per cent. but I wonder if - supposing I had told the computer to remember my username and password - she could have accidentally pressed return and logged into my account couldn;t she? It might just be coincidence and nothing at all to do with her - but to be honest I'd rather it was her by accident than some computer whizz in far off lands who's draining my bank account.

I'm really worried about this and don;t know what to do. paypal claim no-one can access my bank details but I'm worried sick. I tried to call them but there's no-one there til 3pm

Are you sure the emails were genuine?
Did they ask you to enter your username and password?
Paypal and eBay would not ask you to enter your username and password from an email link.
Forward them to 'spoof @ebay.com' and '[email protected]' and they will tell you if they are genuine.
Has any money actually been taken from your account?
It may have defaulted to your nanny's account simply because she had saved her settings on your computer.

I was pretty suspicious of the emails - and I didn;t enter any account details from a link contained in them. the only thing I did - i think - was use a link to report them - but it had - or appeared to have the @ebay.co.uk

re my nanny - I'm sure that yes it defaulted to her name - but it just made me wonder if, when she tried to use it, it defaulted to mine, and she didn;t notice iyswim. But I suspect the nanny thing has nothing to do with it - it's probably just a coincidence.

They really do sound like spoof emails - some of them are very clever and look extremely authentic. I would recommend forwarding them to the spoof@ addresses below - rather than clicking on any links in the emails.

did you click on a link in the email to report?

Any clicks at all from an email can result in trouble.

Do the forwarding to spoof and change your passwords immediately.

If you get concerned over any of it contact ebay via live help.
