Potential unpaid item

Buyer is slow to pay. Have been in contact and they have promised to pay but are just about to miss the deadline. I have been very understanding so far but my patience is not infinite. Is it better to open a case or offer to cancel the order? If I open a case ,would they be able to give me neg feedback, and does Ebay or me give them neg feedback (or neither?)

I think they can still give you neg feedback, I think most sellers usually cancel the case and relist.

A buyer can only leave a neg if they pay for an item. Sellers cannot leave negs for buyers.

How long have you been waiting for payment? If they promised to pay by a certain date and haven't then I'd open a non payment case definitely, just make sure you revisit it to close it out and re claim your eBay fees ASAP. (If you leave it this will happen eventually but it's always good to get it done as quick as poss IMO)

You can set a default in your account settings for unpaid item cases to automatically open after your chosen amount of days once it's sold. eBay open & close them for you, automatically. Very handy as it saves you the hassle and forgetfulness etc.

I would register the case as 1 I think it's still the case eBay can wave the fees to relist on unpaid items and 2 multiple no payments can lead to blocking/suspension. Honestly I'm not sure how much either hold true these days but I woul go through the process just incase as pp said feedback can't be left if they haven't/don't pay if they do pay late and give negative you can challenge it and eBay should uphold the challenge

Thanks. He has messaged to say he can't pay due to various 'practical' reasons so says I ought to relist. Bit annoyed as item all packaged up ready to go. So do I now open a case?

Opps- forgot. What's the difference between opening a case and just cancelling the order (if the buyer has changed their minds)?

I'd get him to cancel it. Once a buyer wins something in the drop down menu he can select cancel order. Which you would then get a message telling you. If he doesn't do this then you can do it. Go to the sold item and on the drop down menu you will see the option to cancel order. Selecting 'the buyer requested cancellation' as the reason. I don't think you loose your final value fee, I don't think you do. A quick google will tell you. No point in opening a unpaid item case as this will only prolong the wait for you (over a week) as in to re list it etc, because he's already told you he's not buying it. If he keeps on cancelling etc eBay will know and see a pattern. Don't need a unpaid item case to prove he's a time waster. Which is what he is. Ebay will give him strikes or suspend his account etc if he carries on. I hate time wasters. I have a blocked list as long as my arm full of them. So block him too.

In reference to your question. You defo get your final value fee back if an unpaid item case opens then closes and he doesn't pay. Someone else might be able to tell you on here if you do if you cancel it selecting buyer requested cancellation.

Don't cancel, this just encourages these timewasters. And if they don't respond to your cancellation request (which is often the case) it takes much longer to close out than an unpaid item.
