Just looking on ebay and some cheeky fecker is using a photo that I took and used to sell something, to sell their thing.

I've checked carefully and it is 100% def. my photo. Am I just overreacting or would this pi$$ you off too? Admittedly I might be less annoyed in a bit but at the moment its really annoyed me.

They are not allowed to do this it is not accepted on ebay, you have to report them & there listing will be ended.

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 13:58

Is that rigt? I did wonder as I was always under the impression that the copyright of a photo remained with the person who took it

i actully did this the other day, because my camera is broke (i bought the item from ebay months ago) and so used THAT picture to relist it!

TBH it wouldnt bother me

onlyjoking9329 · 04/03/2007 13:59

i remember reading about this happening to someone else, they had used a photo hosting site, so after someone knicked their photo the person changed the photo on the hosting site to something really rude!

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 14:01

They didn't buy they items from me though. They are selling similar/same sort of thing but its MY picture.

Maybe I'm being a bit Victoria Meldrew-ish about it as I've been cooped up indoors all day !

If you have bought the item from the person whose picture you are nicking, just ask them if they mind you using it. I bet they won't. The only thing is, that if you are selling on the item at a later date, it may no longer be in the condition in which it was first photographed.

Do broken cameras sell well on eBay?

Betty they are out of order - grass them up.

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 14:06

I'm trying to find something on ebay that clarifies it but no luck yet.

Glad some of you agree and think they are a bit out of order too.

I'm sure it's against the rules too. F&Z, I took kitty's post to mean that she couldn't take a picture of whatever she had bought because her camera had broken, not that he camera was the object.

This link refers specifically to reviews and guides but also mentions listings can be cancelleed due to picture theft.

I'll keep looking for a better link, though

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2007 14:11

Tamum oh yeah!

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2007 14:14

here you go . There's a link to report them.

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 14:14

Thanks Franny -that link sums it up nicely.

PS -love the idea of an < I am a twat> emoticon

no my camera is broken so i couldnt take a picture of the seperate item im selling (not selling the broken camera!) lol

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 04/03/2007 14:22

Wouldn't bother me either.. it's just a picture.. of a thing!

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 14:29

ah but Shiny, it took me ages to set up the picture. Others have photgraphed these items as they come with no imagination but my photo is quite striking and shows the potential (sorry to be cryptic but I don't want to "out" my ebay ID as it has my RL name/location etc , also don't want others nicking my ideas!)

nikkie · 04/03/2007 14:37

I sold my broken camera!

What happens when a picture in 'pinched' from Amazon etc?

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2007 14:40

For regular sellers, a competitor stealing your photo is incredibly annoying and can even affect your business.

If you host your own pictures, people are stealing bandwidth by linking to your pictures without permission.

There are lots of reasons why it's not ok to pinch someone's picture to sell on eBay.

nikkid21 · 04/03/2007 19:33

If any reading this is considering using some one elses photo I would really caution you not to. Getting the listing pulled is the least of your problems.
Some of the big powersellers will hack into your listing and replace your photo with a 'photo thief' banner or pornographic images.
I'm a powerseller and quite often see the posts for new links of nasty pictures to substitute 'stolen' ones with.

Dh gets this a lot as he is a tax registered e-bay trader. He hates it, but have to say so far he ahs done nothing- when he complained about someone doing something similar bewfore, that person watched each of his auctions and e-mailed each buyer to say DH was fiddling them, withdraw bid. That chap got booted off Ebay, but we lost a lot of trade and it took a while to build abck the sales (we do about £40 profit a week, which we need to replace the car the garage down the road trashed >)
