Accepting an offer to buy it now when item not listed as buy it now

I have been made a reasonable offer for an item im selling on ebay, people have been bidding on the item and there is still 5 days to go. Can I take it off ebay or should I let run without accepting the buy it now offer. I did not place it on ebay with a buy it now option.

if you have bids on it already, you should let it run.

Lullabyloo · 03/03/2007 15:15

if you had no bids on the item it would be ok to accept a Buy it Now offer.

ya, i dont think you can add a 'bin' once you have bids or less than 12 hours left.

Trix11 · 03/03/2007 17:31

Whats a 'bin'

Bin-Buy It Now

It's possible but complicated:

The relevant bit is at the end.

ebay has changed its rules recently as well I dont think its that easy to end an auction, you can still end to the highest bidder so I would say get the buyer to bid and when they are the highest bidder end the auction to them

Trix11 · 04/03/2007 21:15

Thanks everyone - I decided not to end the auction but to carry on as there were bidders and watchers.

Does anyone know what I did wrong? Today I followed the advice below in order to sell early to the high bidder after someone approached me for a buy it now price. The bidder said she put in £75 as her maximum bid, but the highest bid showed up as £62 because the previous highest bid was £60 and £2 is the increment at that price level. When I went through the 'End my listing early form' there was no way to accept anything other than £62. Fortunately the buyer has paid me the difference via a Paypal request, but what should I (or the bidder) have done to ensure that £75 would show up as the bid? All I can think of is that she should have kept bidding against herself to get it up to £75 but this seems a bit of a clunky solution. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom on this one, I've been puzzling on it all afternoon.

hairymclary · 27/03/2007 22:10

there isn't anything different you could have done because thjat isn't how ebay is supposed to work.
technically if you end the auction early the highest bidder only has to pay his/her highest bid.

WotzsanEgg · 27/03/2007 22:14

If you get asked if you would do a BIN £ - You can always revise your listing (at a small cost) to a buy it now as long as there are not bids and it has 12 hours left to go.

If you get asked in furture, email them back (via ebay) saying if they are intereested that you will put a BIN price on but it will be more (however much you are comfortable selling at) and if they want they can buy it now, or carrry on bidding.

phatcat · 27/03/2007 22:18

Bingo! thanks WotzanEgg, I knew there must be a more elegant solution. Thanks for your reply too hairy.

bEllieK · 27/03/2007 22:21

that wouldn't have worked for you tho phatcat as there were already bids on your item and you can only add BIN if there are no bids.

phatcat · 27/03/2007 22:21

Ah but it did have bids on it, so back to square one!

phatcat · 27/03/2007 22:24

You're faster than me bEllieK!

As well as trying to think of the workaround
I'm wondering what's the philosophy underpinning disallowing BIN once a bid has been received?

WotzsanEgg · 28/03/2007 09:21

bEllieK is right and if there are bids I would email back saying

I am following ebays guidelines and as there are bids already on this item, I can't revise my listing to a BIN. Sorry and 'happy bidding'.

The other thing about a buyer putting in their max bid and you ending it early has been answered by hairymclary.
The fact is a Winning buyer could put a max bid on of £100, if the bid below that is £50, ebay will only add £2 so £52 is what the highest bidder ends up paying.
