Buyer wants to buy outside Ebay

I'm selling a pair of shoes, auction, on Ebay and someone has contacted me offering me £170 for them. I said I'd end the auction and put them back up with a Buy it Now price but she said that she would just pay me direct via PayPal, not using Ebay.

This feels dodgy to me, is it? Apart from breaking the eBay selling rules, obviously. I'm wondering whether she is planning to pay it on PayPal as a personal payment, not a payment for goods, and then to get a chargeback that way?

Also she is being pushy about doing it today. And she can't spell. And she calls me hun prejudiced

Don't do it. It is weird that she doesn't want to do it through eBay at all

A scam. Don't do it. Ebay is there for a reason, that is to have a marketplace with protection.

There's no reason why she shouldn't be able to do the but it now thing, this has happened to me before and I was told it was dodgy and not to do it!

Just send her one last email saying you are only happy to continue through eBay and if she wants them to bid on them

My worry would be if she bought them now even on eBay she might just claim she hasn't received them or something and eBay would side with her and you would have to refund, this has happened to me before!

If she does end up buying them, spend a bit more money and send them recorded delivery

If you don't feel happy about doing it I would insist it goes though ebay. Some times it's worth it but if she's being pushy she might be a fraudster.

Thanks guys! There's nothing I can pin my finger on, it just feels a bit risky. I'll tell her to bid like everyone else!

Will def be sending registered delivery too, I prefer do that with anything worth over £20 or so.

It's a Friday. The person gets your details. You get a confirmation mail ostensibly from PayPal saying the payment is in your account. You go and post the item. Then discover that the original confirmation is a scam. No money, no item, no trace of 'buyer'. And 'buyer' has a weekend ahead to delay you sorting it out.

Yeah I've heard about that, would always log into my PayPal to check payment now but you're right, the hassle of sorting it out, relisting etc... Not worth it!

I often sell things outside eBay and have never had a problem. It saves you the 10% fees.

To be honest it's partly the amount they were offering that made me suspicious - I'm pretty sure they're not worth that much!

I refuse anything like this because the chances of the buyer being one of the really difficult people is so much higher. If you end up dealing with a real live one, there's the potential to make a small part of life miserable for a period of time.

Also, since I hate being scammed I go out of my way to avoid scamming and that includes scamming ebay.

My OH sold a PSP for my friend as she doesn't have ebay. Right as the listing was ending someone bid £300, thereby winning the item. Cue days of angry emails wanting the item to be posted NOW, despite payment not coming through. Then fake PayPal mails, then threats to get the police in, and ebay to ban OH from the world...
