Hi. I have bought off eBay but not sold before so I was looking for a bit of advice.

I am selling my wedding dress/ shoes/other bits and was wondering first of all, what type of price to expect.

Dress was £170 new, worn once, shoes £40 worn once. What sort of starting price would you put? And is it possible to put a reserve on? I obviously want to get as much as I can, but also don't want to put people off.

Also, how do I know how much to charge for postage?

Any other advice would also be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Oh really? That's interesting.

but why start so low when the listing fee at 99p of £99 is the same cost?

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 07/08/2016 17:48

I didn't think there was a listing fee on a basic advert with up to 12 photos.

lljkk · 07/08/2016 18:10

@Eminybob: Ebay takes 10% of every penny you take, the total for both postage & sale price.
Paypal take another 3.4% + 20p of the sale+postage total.

Listing for 99p = risk that you will sell for 99p.

Auctions are a faff... who likes to bid on auctions & wait & see if you maybe got it? Buy-it-now is more reliable.

ProcrastinatingNow · 07/08/2016 18:13

Because you get much more views and interest. It's always worked for us. Been on eBay 10+ years and it's very rare any item sells cheap.

lljkk · 07/08/2016 18:17

What do you call "cheap", Proscratinating?
I'm impressed if you have never sold something for a lot less than you thought it was worth.

smilingeyes11 · 07/08/2016 18:17

I don't agree Procrastinating - if someone is going to buy at the price they want to pay the starting at 99p makes no odds. I don't think people have the time or energy to trawl through loads of 99p listings anymore - eBay is massively busier than it was 10-15 years ago and most people I think want buy it now rather than hanging round for a 99p auction to finish and for the stress of sniping in the closing seconds.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 07/08/2016 18:38

I didn't realise that about Paypal too.
I think a lot of people do like the auctions though.

smilingeyes11 · 07/08/2016 18:50

I don't think so - I think a buy it now with a best offer feels just as much as a bargain, plus no waiting round for an auction to finish.

Eminybob · 07/08/2016 18:55

If I have a buy it now with best offer, if the best offer I get is too low can I decline it?

OP posts:
smilingeyes11 · 07/08/2016 19:03

yes you can - but I always start buy it nows cheekily high, then accept a sensible best offer. I get the price I want, buyer feels they got a bargain. Everyone is happy. Plus free p&p means they cannot trash your postage stars either.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 07/08/2016 19:14

I usually have a mixture of both. Sometimes Ebay recommends a certain option. Although you're not forced to do what they say.

19lottie82 · 07/08/2016 19:20

When you list a best offer you can set it to automatically reject offers below a certain amount and accept ones above certain amounts.

Eminybob · 07/08/2016 19:31

This is all really good stuff. Thank you to everyone who has replied.

For some reason I feel really nervous about making listings. I have so much stuff, aside from the wedding stuff that I've been saying for years I should eBay but have procrastinated doing it. Thanks to the advice on here I feel a lot more confident about doing it now. And sooooo need the money!

Just put about 5 items on to start with, see how you get on.

ProcrastinatingNow · 07/08/2016 22:16

I see your point smiling

ProcrastinatingNow · 07/08/2016 22:16

But low price means more views

lljkk · 08/08/2016 19:13

Views mean nothing if no one bids. I don't much rate watchers, either.

verystressedmum · 14/08/2016 00:39

I don't ever start listings at 99p as I could never be guaranteed the price I want, and it could get one bid and go for 99p...When a listing ends it could be a really slow time and it won't sell for a high price as people are not on eBay to bid on it.

Either start the auction at roughly the price you want, but it now at the price you want or price it higher with best offer.

But check other items that are on sale at the same so yours isn't a lot higher or you'll find it might not sell - unless there are only a few other items and it's a good seller.

i8sum314 · 14/08/2016 09:45

Can you go back in and lower the price after you've put things on at a fixed "buy it now' price. I put up some t shirts (first attempt to sell) and im not getting views so do i have to wait til 30 days are up to re-sell ? (Either cheaper or try an auction)

smilingeyes11 · 14/08/2016 10:28

yes you can lower the price - you can end a listing also if no bids/buyers and more than 12 hours to end too.

i8sum314 · 14/08/2016 10:52

Thanks. Ill have a try later
