Cash on collection v paypal

I'm a bit confused. I've just sold an item, full buy it now price, local collection only. I asked for cash on collection but the buyer has paid by paypal. They're not collecting until Friday.

Have just read up on paypal for cash on collection and that it's a no-no. Could someone talk me through what I do to get out of this and ask for cash on collection on Friday?

If I refund the payment, what will that do to the listing? I don't want to open the listing up again?

Refund the payment and send the buyer a polite message saying as stated in the listing it's cash on collection only, as accepting PayPal will void your seller protection.

This won't affect the listing in anyway, just make sure you mark it as paid once the buyer has handed over the cash.

Definitely refund and insist on cash, even if they say no and you have to relist. It's not worth the risk, they can collect and then say they haven't and get a refund from paypal

I'm assuming there's a reason you want cash and not PayPal. Personally I prefer not to accept cash, as people always seem to think they can negotiate on the doorstep! Anyway if it clearly stated cash only in your advert, then do as PP have said.

HSM - there's a risk they could collect the item and later say they haven't received it and reclaim amount paid in paypal

Yes, just explain and refund the amount. I won something that was cash on collection but paid by PayPal by accident (hate the way they make it so EASY). Seller contacted me and the only thing I would say is that the buyer makes sure the refund has gone through completely before handing over the cash!

have just organised the refund - takes 5 days to go through (min!) so Bo - you are right the buyer will want to make sure the funds are back before he collects. What a hassle!

HSM - if you accept PayPal for a collection only item, then you're leaving yourself wide open to being scammed...... It's always a bad idea!

If I accepted PayPal for pick up I would insist that the buyer sign something to say they had collected it and take a photo of them and the item. I would lie and say I'd been burnt before which is why I asked for cash only.

I have cctv, so I'd like to see them deny collecting it Grin. I just got fed up with people on the doorstep saying "would you accept £xxxx instead?"

Problem with signing stuff, cctv etc is that eBay always favour the buyer and if they can see its been paid and the buyer is saying not received then they are likely to just refund

HSM..... Again, your CCTV would make no difference if the buyer filed a not recieved case. PayPal would still give them their money back. The ONLY thing that will prove delivery is online tracking details, which obviously you can't provide if the buyer collects the item in person.

Getting them to sign something will make no difference. Refund and say cash on collection only.

They would still side with the buyer even if you can provide evidence they collected it? Gee, that's terrible.

Yup anything other than proof of postage i.e recorded and signed for or courier Paypal don't recognise it and will side with the buyer

KP86, that's correct. I understand you point, but Not really terrible as all this is clearly detailed in the seller protection policy that you agree to when you sign up for eBay and PayPal. People just don't bother to read it!

I think what's worse is that there are bastards out there who think it is acceptable to behave in that way and blatantly rip someone off.

Yes for sure. Don't get me wrong, the buck doesn't stop with PayPal. There is always the option of the small claims court, but obviously that's a whole new load of hassle that anyone would want to avoid, but this can be done by never accepting PayPal payments for a collection only item.

I have just listed 2 bulky items that can only be collected, and have put cash on collection in the text.

However, reading the sellers rights on ebay, a seller HAS to offer paypal too, even for collection only items, unless it is an expensive item such as a car, caravan etc.

Is there anywhere on ebay that states accepting paypal for a collection only item will void the sellers protection? I couldn't find it, but only had a quick look.

I know being paid by Paypal would void my rights, but surely ebay cannot state I have to offer Paypal for collection only, then void my rights?
