So what exactly is wrong with buying to sell for a profit on ebay?

I keep seeing threads where people are disgusted with the people who have got wiis(sp?) and have put them on ebay.
What is wrong with people doing this?
Its what shops do...they buy things for 10p and sell them for £1.99.
Cant see the problem myself.

I hope you dont think any of my remarks are silly that wasnt my intention

flutturkey · 21/12/2006 18:37

I presume that is me making stupid remarks thecharmed1, feel free to say whatever you want because to be honest with the 2 weeks I have had I just wouldn't give a flying fuck.

Go into town in the new year buy a console all will be happy, its not for a present for anyone so you are not desperate.

Actually I think you will love getting it in the new year, when everyone else is all down because Christmas is over you can be looking forward to your little present to yourself (I think everyone should have a present to themselves in January).

Hope you have a great Christmas xx

dh just walked into a shop ans bought a Wii last wednesday - and someone on MN bought one in Smiths today. They are available in some shops

flutturkey · 21/12/2006 18:39

PRE ORDERS ON THE INTERNET WOULD HAVE BEEN DELIVERED BY NOW

I SEE YOU AND RAISE YOU

Boobooroastingonanopenfire · 21/12/2006 18:39

Just a small marketing point: Nintendo will have released below expected demand-level on purpose. It's just an old trick to make the item seem even more desirable.

Everyone getting increasingly hysterical about trying to get hold of this 'impossible to find' item is really making the very rich Nintendo bosses' Christmas.

They're all sitting in their carved-out mountain hideaway stroking their white cats and laughing at us!

Their website today said they are expecting limited deliveries in some stores on Thursday and Friday.
Good luck!!

Dh buys and sells (often faulty goods he repairs) DJ equipment on E-Bay. he makes a profit, which is fully disclosed to IR even though its not high (£0 was his profit last year, but its a hobby he likes so he doesn't have to 'pay' for the equipment to do the electronics etc, iyswim- its all taken into balance by IR).

We don't do things like Wii though, only his specialised things.

We had someone get very nasty with us once because they objected- e-mailed all our customers telling lies etc, lost us laods of sales. In the end EBay disciplined him as he was being very threatening to us.

Thecharmed1 · 21/12/2006 18:45

Thanks iota, i will leave it til after christmas i think. Will just make sure i leave the money aside for it!

Thecharmed1 · 21/12/2006 18:46

Peachy, that is an honest way to make some money, and its not ripping people off!

serenitynightholynight · 21/12/2006 18:57

Not getting involved in the arguement - but just wanted to point out that preordering means naff all really. DSis preordered one in October and we still didn't get one, she's been told early January which is a bugger really, but it won't kill the DSs to wait (they aren't spoilt btw, they think they are saving their christmas and birthday money to buy one after DS1's birthday in February. DSis and my Mum are getting it as a joint pressie)

We've tried loads of shops but I don't think we've a chance in the south - all the MNers who have bought them off the shelves seem to be midlands/north.

oh, and to answer the OP (although I said I wouldn't!) don't really care that much about people buying to sell, but it does irritate me when it's cases like this (limited stock etc) I think anyone who pays such inflated prices is pretty daft though.

booge · 21/12/2006 21:05

We bought 2 and sold one to pay for ours with no qualms at all.

persephonesnape · 21/12/2006 21:49

wii aside, i buy a lot of stuff in my local charity shop - mainly womens clothes and list it in e-bay at least double the price i paid at the charity shop. it's laborious. i invest my time in sourcing my garments, listing them, amd ironing, packing and posting them.

as a single mum, working full time, with three children to support on my own, this is the only way that i can think of financing my first family holiday to London to let my children meet relatives they never have. profit be damned, a lot of my customers are still getting a bargain.

i appreciate that's not what we're really talking about, but it's supply and demand with the wii. if people are that stupid, hell mend them.

bingobongo · 21/12/2006 22:55

Less of the wii's. Same is happening with Barbie riding/equestrian doll on ebay with loads of 'you don't want your little darling to be disappointed do you?). Most are going for £25 + and possible are fake!
Problem is that the Barbie horse is in massive supply, loads in all the shops but most aren't selling a doll (with the bendy knees apparently) with the riding gear/hat

kid · 21/12/2006 23:00

All of the people selling BNIB items are selling to make a profit IMO. I personally don't do it, but know lots of people that do.
If I don't want to pay the price they sell it for, I don't bid.

southeastastra · 21/12/2006 23:02

that's the fun of ebay though - you make your own mind up and don't bid if you don't trust

MistleToo · 21/12/2006 23:03

Sometimes you just want to get your money back but some of the bidders are nuts!

I put a Lemar cd on just recently cos I got two for my birthday. Now any normal person would have googled cdwow/Play and discovered you could buy it for £8.95 p&p free but no, the winning bid, including postage was £13!!!

Is it my fault if someone can't be ar*ed to research?

nearlythree · 21/12/2006 23:11

Surely it's down to shops like Argos to limit the number of consoles etc sold per customer? Would be a great goodwill gesture.

LIZS · 22/12/2006 08:51

nearly3 that is true and I'm sure in some instances they have but there are some people who do try to make a profit out of being "professional ebayers" and perhaps have the luxury of time to queue up again and again all over town and amke searate preorders with the intention of receiving multiples. Yes it is caveat emptor and buyers should research what the actual selling prices and demand are but this thread is less about unwanted gifts beign resold. After all the hype it seems this year actually few of the top 10 toys have sold out across the board. Lidl had the Barbie rider about 6 weeks ago for under £8 as did Gamleys.
