Second chance buyer wants to pay less and outside of ebay

Winning bidder refused to pay.

Second chance person wants to buy item, but has offered lower price in cash outside of an ebay transaction. I don't want to fall foul of ebay, but am happy to accept lower price in cash. How do I proceed?

What do you mean "in cash", exactly?

notes! I suppose he wants me to cancel the sale, then he comes along and pays in cash. I'm not too sure about this.

Have you formally gone thru Ebay to make them 2nd chance offer?

A) Yes: they decline formally thru Ebay but then come & pay cash instead.

B) No: they come and pay cash instead & you don't need to do anything else.

they decline formally but never turn up; you just relist when you can next do so for free (& block them in meantime as time waster).

But he sent an email through Ebay suggesting this - could I be thrown off if the transaction goes ahead?

No, I've done it a couple of times for large stuff like sofas and prams. Message him your mobile number and arrange the pick up that way. even if someone did complain to eBay about it, I doubt they would be that bothered.

Thanks for replies: he went through ebay in the end. I was nervous about item as it is quite expensive. And I don't want to get banned from Ebay!

Did he pay by Paypal?

If he's collecting the item, he could later claim his money back and Paypal would refund him as you have no proof of delivery.

You would be better to refund the Paypal transaction and have him pay cash.

If you are posting/courier the item, then make sure you do by a trackable method for expensive things (I think special delivery but post office can advise)

Hopefully he's genuine but you need to protect yourself for larger value items.

Ebay is exhausting me. I've never had a problem in ten years' of ebaying, then all of a sudden I've experienced a series of non-paying winners. It's so irritatingly time-consuming. Grrrrr!!

So it's a collection only item? That wasn't very clear from the OP.

If so the only method of payment you should ever accept is cash!

Don't let him pay by PayPal and collect. I don't eBay and I know that.

You can refund him, been a while since I've sold but there should be an option on paypal (look on the transaction screen, sorry can't remember exactly where) for you to do that. Then message him and ask him to bring cash when he collects. That way the transaction is still on eBay (and you can mark it as paid once you have the cash)
