New postage charges

I was caught out by this as I have not sold anything on ebay for about 9 months. I sold some of the DTs clothing in batches and added what I thought was reasonable postage costs. When I got to the post office to post the items, I nearly fainted with shock! The postage costs for a couple of the items were £2 dearer than I had estimated and the postage for all of them (I had 6 parcels) was higher than my estimate. Where possible, I used 2nd class post but for those over 1.4kg, I had to use 1st class post.

I emailed the buyers to let them know why the items were being sent 2nd class and for the ones over 1.4kg, I just told them that the postage cost was more expensive than I had estimated.

Well, one of the buyers for the heavier parcels reimbursed me the difference in postage cost and gave me a fabulous feedback and the others all gave me positive feedback.

At least I feel better now but I do wonder how many buyers will be put off because of the higher postage charges that sellers will inevitably have to use?

The postage charges are a bit weird. I sold a top the other day, which i had put down £1.75 for postage. Because of the size of it though it went for 75p! It was really big, but very flat.

That is what caught me out. The size of the parcels increased the price significantly.

I got caught out too - I posted a nappy wrap which had previously gone at letter rate, this time cost 89p because it was too fat (I had packed it that way to make it small). Then a few days later I sold another one - packed it a bit flatter and it only cost 37p - so I ended up looking really cheapskate sending it 2nd class letter rate - I was expecting it to be the 89p at 2nd class again - and did not realise until after the stamp was on it !

I find the new postage really difficult to estimate - you either get it way too high or way too low.

So it appears that to reduce the postage costs, make your parcel as flat as possible.
