Selling a car - buyer wants to avoid eBay fees

TeamScoutRifle · 10/09/2015 15:46

I'm selling a car and a potential buyer has asked to come and look at it but would rather buy it without involving eBay because they want to save £50 for the pair of us (??)
I am happy for them to look at the car of course but I am worried about not going through eBay. Should I be?
Obviously I would only accept cash on collection. Please advise.

I did it. A few years ago, and I trusted the man who was buying it.

Cash of course

But if you aren't happy then don't do it.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 10/09/2015 15:50

It's not a problem if you accept cash. In fact Id say it's better. Otherwise how would you do it? Paypal? You have no way of proving buyer has had the car and he could reverse the paypal payment.

TeamScoutRifle · 10/09/2015 15:52

I was just thinking it's on autotrader which would be exactly the same situation. I'm having a stupid moment clearly. Thanks for your replies.

Do not accept paypal. Cash only

Bolograph · 10/09/2015 15:56

It's not a problem if you accept cash.

And know how to check that the big bundle of twenties or fifties are real.

summerwinterton · 10/09/2015 16:09

you never take paypal for a car - that is a given.

and the buyer doesn't save fees by dealing with you outside eBay, but you risk your account if you do the deal this way.

DriverSurpriseMe · 10/09/2015 16:12

I'd be a little suspicious because buyers don't pay eBay fees, only sellers. So why be so keen to do the transaction outside of eBay if it makes no difference to him at all?

summerwinterton · 10/09/2015 16:21

he wants a discount - that is why

bruffin · 10/09/2015 16:25

"And know how to check that the big bundle of twenties or fifties are real"

walk him to the bank and get him to pay the money in.

iwantgin · 10/09/2015 16:49

Or take a cheque, and tell him to come to collect the car once the cheque is cleared?

Agree it's to wangle a discount. If you are saving money - he will want to enjoy that saving.

Bolograph · 10/09/2015 17:17

walk him to the bank and get him to pay the money in.

For all those that live in walking distance of banks that are open at the times of day that cars change hand.

TeamScoutRifle · 10/09/2015 17:26

I've told him the price and that there's no wriggle room. I also told him I have other viewings and if he wants to secure the car he should buy it now or risk losing a great deal. I do have other viewings luckily so I'm not bothered if he has changed his mind. It's better for him to buy it now if he's serious about grabbing a bargain because one guy who's coming over tomorrow is more than likely to buy it. He wanted to come over today to collect but I've been out all day (not on eBay but via autotrader so I haven't cancelled the auction yet) will definitely be cash on collection as I never except PayPal for collection items.

Well meet him at the bank when its open.

TeamScoutRifle · 12/09/2015 07:08

On the day I had 3 viewings scheduled someone bought it now for the full price so all it well. Cash on collection of course Grin
