Buyer asking me to change my listing so she can pay later. What would you do?

I am ebaying like crazy at the mo trying to scrape up some funds for a new winter coat and boots. It's mostly been dead as a doornail in August so have held back until this weekend for free listings and also payday. Anyway, have just listed an item that I know is likely to sell well as a BIN at a reasonable price for a quick sale.

I almost immediately received a message from a potential buyer saying she can't pay until Thursday so can I 'change it' so she can send me the money on thursday then I can post it on my way to work. To be honest I have had my fair share of time wasters/non-payers lately and I'd much rather just leave it and see if anyone else buys it first and if not she can just pay for it on Thurs. Also how would I 'change it'? Would I have to cancel the listing and remember to relist on Wednesday night? I'd lose one of my free listings, wouldn't I?

WWYD?

No, sorry. Tell her you can't reserve the item, but if it's still there on Thursday, when she has funds, then she's welcome to purchase it.

PurpleFrog · 01/09/2015 16:48

I take it you are insisting on immediate payment? I think she wants you to change that so she can pay after she buys it.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 01/09/2015 16:52

Why didnt she just ask if she could buy it now and pay on Thurs? Ebay don't take any action against non payers for 7 days anyway so she wont get a bad rating for it will she. Its only 36 hours realistically, unless you've got it set to 'requires immediate payment'?

Well, there I was thinking I was a bit of an old hand at eBay and I didn't even realise I could change the BIN payment settings! I just assumed a BIN listing required immediate payment. You learn something new every day etc etc! Thank you Purple and Daryl.
I actually took Lotties advice and sent a v friendly and polite reply yesterday saying (completely wrongly, as it now turns out) that I couldn't change the way you pay for a BIN but I hoped the item wd still be there on Thurs and it only had 1 watcher so a good chance it wd still be available. In response I got merely 'will leave it then'- am not sure if that means he/she will leave till Thurs or whether it's the equivalent of stamping off and slamming door In a huff! Time will tell!

Sorry...me again. Been looking at my listing to see where the immediate payment settings are and can't find them anywhere. Is this because I use the eBay app on my phone rather than listing on a desk top computer do you think?

Not sure - I always list on a desktop machine. I only buy on my iPad. I definitely have my BINs set so that I don't require immediate payment. That way I can send an invoice to combine postage etc if required. It may be one of the things you can't change after a listing is live. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can alter my listings.

Thanks Purple.

I have looked and I am able to change that part of my listing on a browser.
There is an "Add or remove options for payments" link at the top of the "Select how you'll be paid" section. It may be that you will have to check that option in there for it to show up in your normal listing form. Is there anything similar on the app? Or do you get a cut-down selection of options?

aniceearlynight · 04/09/2015 09:32

Hi Purple. Thanks for checking that out. When posting a new item last night I realised that at the end of the listing you can set your payment preferences ie PayPal. If you click through to a further screen and there is a button for 'immediate payment for BIN' items.' The weird thing is that the default is to have the button turned off but maybe it automatically turns on when you do a BIN listing?
It's been quite an enlightening experience and I'll know for next time. The buyer didn't come back for the item on Thursday btw so she/he obviously did flounce off in a rage when I didn't change the listing!

I'd block them as well tbh. But I have zero tolerance for this kind of thing on eBay now. Every time I've given an inch they've taken a mile.

YeOldeTrout · 04/09/2015 21:43

Definitely block now.
I'm in the twitchy would probably block camp the moment they asked, but maybe not if it's really an item that seems like nobody else would buy.

aniceearlynight · 04/09/2015 23:00

Well I did think about that as I was a bit worried the buyer would buy the bag then leave malicious feedback as I hadn't done exactly as they asked. At the risk of sounding completely clueless, how do you block a buyer? And can you do it on the eBay app? Many thanks for help and guidance.
