Item returned to me by Royal Mail as undelivered

I sent it 'signed for', RM left a card at the address and kept the parcel at the delivery office to be picked up but no-one came for it.
I've contacted the buyer through ebay but do I need to pay the postage again, £3.90 is quite a lot for me to be out if pocket.

No don't pay for postage. If they want it resent i would ask them to pay postage again.

Either ask them to pay postage again or refund in full. Did you enter the tracking number up to eBay when you dispatched?

I can't remember if I put the number on, I don't always do it.
Weird thing is I posted it the first week of March and this is the first I've heard of any problem.
Maybe she moved away and forgot or something

If it was that long ago I would definitely cancel the sale and refund. very strange!

Did the buyer respond when you contacted her/him?

If they want it resent then they have to pay the postage again.
If no contact or they don't want the item, cancel the sale and refund the cost of the item only. You don't refund the original postage cost as that has been used on sending out in the first place.

I'm going through hell with similar...item was returned to me, buyer convinced I'm defrauding him as he says didn't receive card. He refuses to pay additional postage, I'm refusing to post without. Ebay have been involved, I've had my first negative review, Sale of Goods Act misquoted....I've now refunded his £7 for the item and he's talking about getting the police involved as it's eBay fraud. If this was a job I'd be off work with stress. Still think I made the right decision to ask for extra postage as it's not my fault that Signed For item wasn't collected by him, or that it took him three weeks to get in touch in the first place (and he subsequently takes 2-3 weeks to respond to my messages!).

It's possible royal mail didn't put a card through. Ours are buggers for it!

I forgot about a parcel. Remembered, queried with seller, rang the sorting office and when I got there there were three packages.

Dudess - as long as you refunded him all of his money then the buyer doesn't have a leg to stand on. And the police would not get involved.

I listed the item at 10.50, plus free postage, so I partially refunded, I guess. Maybe if this had been sorted out over a week or so instead of three months I wouldn't have seller's rage....I could have given full refund then relisted, but I would have still been out of pocket with the first item...or a possible second buyer would have suffered additonal cost! I'm a reasonable person, really, but this buyer pushed me too far, lol.

How frustrating! Similar thing happened to me, except my buyer opened a case pretending she hadn't received the item asking for a refund.

I only found out when days later I received the parcel, which had a redelivery sticker present, had been requested by the buyer but she just hadn't bothered to be home for redelivery or to go and collect it from the PO. Far easier to claim a refund from me! Sorry, I'm hacked off with ebay buyers at the moment (see my thread!)

you need to give them a full refund, not a partial one. Sorry, but I would have negged too. And you should have sent a cancellation to get your fees back too.

Thanks, Cherryapple, in hindsight I would have given full refund, but I was waiting for him to tell me what he wanted to do...he indicated he still wanted the item....only found out he wanted refund when he gave neg feedback. Have contacted Royal Mail and they confirmed they tried to deliver it. Can't even look at item now, it's caused so much stress, lol!

you can still refund him now - he shouldn't be out of pocket for the postage.

See, Cherryapple, that's the genuinely headscratching thing...if I fully refund him, then I'm out of pocket for postage. I sent it (signed for) in good faith it would be received. Royal Mail attempted delivery, but buyer says no card received. Took him 3 weeks to contact me, which any ebayer knows is how long items are kept for at a sorting office. He didn't chase them, or me, before 3 weeks had passed. And he's been threatening as well as uncooperative and uncommunicative. Ebay told me it was my responsibility to send it, which I did. Really baffling situation, and all for a tenner!

yes I get your point - but if he opens a not received case eBay will force a full refund. And waiting 3 weeks for an item, unusual yes but not unheard of. Him being threatening is a different issue entirely. But it is possible that a card was not left - they often aren't.
