I've not really sold much on Ebay though I do buy a fair bit on there.

I listed a sofabed for £350. It's in excellent nick and I listed it cash on collection as I'd heard of people paying by Paypal then somehow ending up with the goods they'd collected and a Paypal refund.

A buyer wants to arrange collection and pay by bank transfer without even seeing the sofa as she lives 250 miles away. She seems very nice - been a member for 10 years and a decent history of buying/selling - good feedback.

My sister fell for an Ebay scam as a buyer and lost thousands of pounds so I'm wary but I don't know how it could be a problem if she pays by bank transfer rather than Paypal. Am I being naive? And what if she didn't like the sofa? She's taking a lot on trust if she's genuine.

Yes bank transfer is perfectly safe. But if they are arranging a courier what about packaging and you waiting around for a day for them to arrive. If they pay by bank transfer and don't like the sofa they have no recourse with eBay at all so no risk of a chargeback.

Good points thanks Cherry. Also, it's good to know that bank transfer is safe. I could work from home on the day it was to be collected so that would be ok. I suppose I'd have to agree the packaging - or lack of - in advance with the buyer.

Would you say she'd have to wait until I have the cleared payment in my account before the sofa can be collected. Even as I'm typing that, I know it's a daft question Smile

If she pays by bank transfer the money will be in your account if not instantly then within a couple of hours

Thanks Red. It seems Shock to give out bank details to anyone though.Grin
So if you were me, would you go ahead with this sale?

I've allowed courier collection of an ebay sofa before. The couriers brought blankets to wrap.

I specified time slots that I could be available for collection so I didn't have to hand around for a whole day. For example I'm in most of the time but do the school/ nursery run.

YawnyMcYawn · 07/04/2015 21:45

Thanks Mis. Good to know. I'll reply to her email and ask her how she would plan to have it collected. TBH I've assumed she'll use a courier but it could be her Uncle Albert. Smile

They'd have to haul you thru small claims court to get the money back, easier to return it in decent condition themselves and get cash back.

Yes I'd definitely go thru with the sale, but try to leave a gap (I think 3 days is advised?) between transfer & collection by courier. There is sometimes a way to call back a bank transfer within a small window (no more than 36 hours?)

Have you never written a cheque to anyone? It has all the same details on it :)

Laughing at my own ridiculousness here Soup

Right then. That's decided. I'll go for it. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to give advice - much appreciated. Star
