I listed an item on Ebay a couple of weeks ago (largeish and made of plastic). It was won by someone overseas and I was immediately kicking myself as must have stupidly ticked the posting overseas option where the global shipping centre was being used, but tbh was very surprised that someone would go to the trouble of buying this item from another country.

Anyway, I had spent great time and care wrapping up the item, stacking all of the different parts, wrapping in bubble wrap then into an extremely thick plastic bag, and it felt secure/protected enough for national delivery but had a bad feeling about it being shipped abroad as had visions of it in a massive crate being squashed. So crossed my fingers and off it went and had forgotten all about it until today when I got an ebay message from an irate French woman enclosing a photo of the item totally shattered Sad

I've taken a quick look at the global shipping/ebay service and it seems that the seller is automatically covered for damage for items if it happens in international transit, but how on earth do you prove that it happened during that leg of the journey?

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm kicking myself now for not paying more attention to the shipping options, and also not using a sturdy box was an oversight on my part but also am pretty sure the crushing happened during the international bit!

As long as it reached the global shipping centre in one piece your obligations have been met. Once it leaves there it's ebays responsibility, not yours.

I've managed to speak to ebay on the phone this afternoon, and was put through to someone in the global shipping dept, and was told that the buyer will have to raise a case. Have written to her to ask her to do this, but she seems to think it would be too much hassle so will have to press upon her the importance of it.

Unfortunately, she could still leave me negative feedback and there's not much I can do - it's such a pain!
