Selling on FB sites instead of ebay. is this the norm re cheeky people!

tried selling on a few sites as been a bit fed up with ebay lately, also no costs if on FB
I always offer to deliver for free to local areas (because I live in a place hard to get to)
So far only sold two things (and delivered them for free) but hey ho, Christmas coming and it might be a better time now

But is this the norm? i.e. people asking for freebies. Surely if i was giving away for free I'd list on free cycle? or actually state that item is free (if they pick up that is) . I've listed a few things for my mother, she had a playgroup, so it's stuff from there. She's given me stuff to help me out as i'm in dire straits financially. I name very low and fair prices (i.e. i clearly state price, rather than having people ask or offer a price) and that i'll deliver for free (or further afield if petrol paid) yet I still keep getting bombarded with messages, i.e., 'can i have this for free?' 'woud you donate it to a church group and deliver it for free?' etc? I mean i don't mind the messages as such (although the answer would be no, but i'd be more generous if i wasnt in such a state financially!) but wasnt expecting this, on ebay you don't list something for say, £15 and have someone ask for it for free!
anyone else having luck selling in other ways than ebay?

i guess i just feel kind of bad having to say no! and other peoples sob stories. but if i don't sell some stuff i will be a sob story! this is literally for food money . Im on JsA and job hunting and not got a penny to my name till end of next week. a bit of petrol in car thanks to my mum lending me a tenner and thats it, seriously. so I'm in no position for freebies

i would honestly consider it if i was working (or def to a favourite charity but then if that was the case, i'd just drop it to a shop and not bother on FB! i mean, i am offering to deliver for free! i live in the sticks) They don't know my financial situation but even so, that's not the point Hmm

I'd say it was a bit cheeky. Ignore those messages. Could you try a car boot? Or maybe a school or church table sale if you can find one - usually for these I think you pay for the table.

ebay is a bit slow recently. I've never tried fb not sure if I fancy it with what you have described. For what it's worth I think some buyers on ebay have been slightly more rude/abrupt lately and I have blocked a few recently.

Beehatch · 03/10/2014 11:28

They are being cheeky! I'm on a number of selling groups round here, people will often try a lower offer, but not ask for free!
Think it is very nice of you to offer delivery too.

LadyRubyPenhaligon · 03/10/2014 11:38

But people do this on eBay too, I've had numerous messages asking for huge discounts because the buyer has been made redundant. I always just message back saying so have I (true) and that's why am selling stuff.

romacarinar · 03/10/2014 15:48

I never sold anything on FB before, but would like to try - I do not even know where to start. Can anyone help, please...

Jacksonville14 · 03/10/2014 16:34

you just find a selling page local to you - so if you are in Cardiff, just type in Cardiff selling page or Cardiff for sale in the search bar and see which groups come up. Then you just request to join and post a photo with a description - and remember always cash only.

Whereisegg · 03/10/2014 16:38

I sell loads on fb, and no, it's not normal.
I always check what others are selling similar for and price accordingly but there is often someone who offers a third of the price and wants free delivery.

romacarinar · 03/10/2014 21:39

thanks will try... can i just ask why you recommend cash only?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 03/10/2014 21:42

I've sold a bit on FB, but mostly low value items, and never had any problems. They sound v cheeky!

Although our group is pretty local (fairly small geographical area in a city) and there's always the chance that if you act like an arse you will come across them on the high street, which probably cuts down on cheekiness...

LeftRightCentre · 03/10/2014 21:44

Not normal. Arseholes. I wouldn't even bother answering those messages and in the future I'd write: no freebies or discounts.

Jacksonville14 · 03/10/2014 22:24

because someone can pay by paypal, collect your item, and then claim not received and get a full refund. You should only take paypal if you have online proof of delivery.

alltoomuchrightnow · 08/10/2014 22:23

hmmm. Back to eBay I reckon. FB far too annoying . A few more cheeky ones or just annoying because they've not read the words at all

say e.g. I lived in a village 5 miles outside Beverley (I don't, but just as an example). Say there's no selling site for my particular hamlet or village so I go onto the Beverley buy and sell site (as you would.. you go to the nearest town, or city to you, if there's none for the nearest village). Also my address comes under 'Beverley' even though it should be 'near Beverley'.
This is the actual scenario (but using 'Beverley' here)- tonight I drop down the price of a really unusual Traffic People (from Topshop) skirt to only £3 .
I very clearly state where I live (e.g. this particular estate, next to this gym, this equestrian centre , etc) so that they can pick up, basically, I give everything but my house number

I offer to deliver for FREE to local villages (but not as far as right into Beverley) if they buy something else off me. So even if they buy something else for as low as £2 , I will deliver for free. Which could be up to an 7 mile round trip , and they've only spent £5. (mug, I know)
So, someone inboxes me saying yes they'll have it for the new reduced price of £3 so can they have my address.
I give them the full address and ask them if they have satnav as it can be hard to find (if they don't know the gym or equestrian centre, say, as if they did, it would be a doddle.. it is a well known area despite out in the sticks)
They immediately reply, very put out, 'what you don't live in BEVERLEY? I thought you lived IN Beverley! do you ever go into Beverley as i'd like you to deliver it there'

for a £3 skirt !!!
arghhh!

ie i state clearly where i live.. the exact area and landmarks.. in the actual listing.. and not any private in boxing.. this i do as a way to avoid confusion with would be buyers Hmm Hmm
