Free postage, buyer wants discount!

afterthought · 05/08/2014 18:58

I have started selling things with free postage, as per advice I received on here, and accounted for this in my start price. On the items I was selling I don't think it worked as they only sold on my third attempt after reducing the price (I don't think the items were overpriced - brand names, new this season listed at 25% of RRP).

One buyer has bought 2 items from me and has asked for a discount since postage is free and it won't cost me as much to post. If I had requested postage as an 'extra' I would understand it, but is it a bit cheeky to ask for a discount (the items only sold at the minimum bid price)? Just wondering before I get back to them. I don't really want to give a discount as on two items that together cost £170, I'll only make about £30 once I've paid postage and fees.

you can't give them a discount if it is free. Send them tracked though to prove delivery - try Hermes if under 1kg. Will cost you under £3.

Delphiniumsblue · 05/08/2014 19:18

Ridiculous. You are doing free- you can't do cheaper than that!

nauticant · 05/08/2014 23:03

Tell them you'll charge £0.00 but will knock off the other £0.00 leading to a new adjusted price of £0.00.

"No, that won't be possible. " is a perfectly reasonable answer.

bloodyteenagers · 05/08/2014 23:09

I would message back saying I think you have made a mistake, and contacted the wrong seller about the reduction for p&p.

GloriousGloria · 05/08/2014 23:20

Gordon Bennett they just get cheekier and cheekier don't they? And I'm more of a buyer than a seller.

The price is the price the auction has ended at this price with free postage and package

dozily · 05/08/2014 23:20

I think it's a reasonable request (it's true it will save you money posting both things to the same buyer) but equally it's reasonable to say no (nicely!)

Delphiniumsblue · 06/08/2014 06:28

Anyone can ask- you can just politely reply. I like the answer of TravelinColour.

glammanana · 06/08/2014 16:59

Erm no is the only answer to that don't you think, the cheek of them !! the only time I give a discount is if the buyer picks up from me as I do have free P&P on all my listings, the discount I give is the same as the postage will be so I don't loose out on anything in the long run and buyer thinks you are a great seller Grin

queenofthepirates · 07/08/2014 23:29

yeah give them a pound off, everyone likes a bargain!

loudarts · 07/08/2014 23:33

Kinda cheeky to ask, tell them no

Delphiniumsblue · 08/08/2014 07:45

Tell them a pound off nothing = nothing.

Delphiniumsblue · 08/08/2014 07:46

I can't get over the cheek of someone getting it post free and then wanting the buyer to pay them to post it!

ohdearitshappeningtome · 08/08/2014 07:48

What kind of discount are they expecting?

4littleones · 09/08/2014 08:13

I don't think it's that unreasonable. The postage isn't really free as like you say, it's accounted for in the price, just not showing as a separate amount. You would spend a fair bit more on postage if there was 2 separate buyers, so really it's no different to if the postage cost was listed separately surely?

Delphiniumsblue · 09/08/2014 16:54

Of course it is different! How can you get cheaper than free? How on earth is the buyer to know what I actually wanted for the item? No harm in asking, but I wouldn't give them a discount on free.

I think you all sound a little stressed out to easily. Yes asking for things more cheaply, when it's already been discounted is cheeky. Unless they was actually meaning it in a nice way like, just shove the two items in together less shipping for you. In some cases this would be perfectly fine. But if the item is heavy and will naturally cost to ship, then no. But if it was a t-shirt in with another t-shirt then yeah I get it.
I know this isn't about a t-shirt, so I would say it will cost xyz to ship for you I can't deduct anymore. I literally just say no. No explanation needed. But alot of these mums on mums net, are like the world is out to bite them and maybe just maybe the buyer isn't clued up on shipping, postage fees, maybe they are young. Maybe you have a 12-15yr old wrangling another few quid off. Because they only have £30 in their life. It's not always as dark and doomy.

Just say no.

No it didn't take me 10yrs to post. It took me since I joined this page yesterday. I didn't notice the age of the post, the answer is for others who may enquire about such things. I was looking around to see what people's opinions where on fees and eBay and things. I didn't need to look for those opinions 10yrs ago. Whole point is. It's always here. Forever. Can still have a opinion years later. For those like me who might look NOW. Someone else might have a similar situation like you and search advice. That is what forums and internet is for. Pretend I wasn't talking to you solely. It took you less than 24hrs to try be witty and mean. 10yr ago I was 26 I wasn't bothered about postage. Maybe ten years on I sell stuff now. And I wanted to look around and found a old post (didn't clock it was old) as I answered in bed. Not that big deal. Take care and have a fantastic 😍 😍 😍 week
