Do you always contact a seller before leaving a neg

I bought a pram and collected it today. It is totally my own fault as I didn't check it over before I took it home. It was described as "good used condition". However, the brakes are mangled and don't work, there is a rip in the raincover and the seat cover has massive holes in the back.

I do actually still want it as I really don't want to have to drive back to the seller again, it was a reasonable price and by spending a bit more money I can make it work, but it is not what I thought I was buying. I feel I have really missed the boat to contact her about how it is not as described but I certainly want to leave a neg, but is it best to contact her first to explain why?

I didn't because there was no way my (similar) situation was an honest mistake. It was a lie and sold under false pretences. I thought what was the point of getting into an email debate with her? She'd just say ok return and go on selling and lying. I left neg and told others to be wary of her.

I would contact and see if there is anything you can do to come to a resolution beforehand. I was left negative when I sold a Christmas jumper to someone who didn't pay for it till after Christmas and then tried to say it was too small. At no point did she contact me before or even respond to emails I sent her after. Think she was just annoyed she hadn't been better organised or that I refused to send it till she'd paid!

Anyway I digress. I would contact the seller first and then if it can't be resolved go for negative.

As wise posters have said on other threads, try to avoid giving the message "give me a partial refund or else there'll be negative feedback". Something along the lines of asking for your partial refund or whatever and mentioning that you've not left feedback yet but once you've worked something out you'll leave feedback reflecting your experience of the transaction would be better.

floellabenjaminsearrings · 30/07/2014 22:10

nauticant that is exactly what I want to avoid. I want to express my displeasure, without making it look like feedback blackmail. She has 2000+ feedback with only a couple of negs. Regardless of if she were to offer me a refund, it is more a principle thing really as I don't think she should describe something as good used condition, when actually it doesn't properly function.

you should contact before leaving a neg. Don't threaten neg, just explain how unhappy you are. Leave it to them to offer some compensation.

I'd be annoyed you didn't look closely when you bought it. Were those flaws not described at all in the listing?

floellabenjaminsearrings · 30/07/2014 22:23

The flaws were not mentioned in the description or photos. Financially, I prepared to chalk it down to experience, particularly given that I didn't check it when I collected. As I say it is more a principle thing.

I think it is courteous to contact them first if you feel they are genuine sellers who just made a mistake. If you feel they were trying to pull a fast one then it's good to warn others.

I once listed a top for auction, sold it elsewhere (to a family member), and forgot to cancel the listing ??
When it sold, I explained it to the buyer, and couldn't apologise enough at having to cancel the sale. Honestly, if she had contacted me to explain her displeasure, I would have actually sold it to her, but as it was, she made no contact with me but gave me horrendous negative feedback. I was gutted as I am actually a genuine and honest seller.
