I'm an idiot. What do you do?

I bid on a door knocker listed in architectural antiques and described as antique/vintage - thought it looked nice and old.

Realised today after checking the guy's feedback, that he had got a neutral for selling something similar that wasn't old but just 'aged' - and I've found the one I have bid on, listed for sale on a hardware website for about half what I've bid.

It's too late to withdraw the bid. I've emailed asking him to cancel it, and apologising for my mistake, but from the replies he left to the other person who did what I've done, he isn't going to be happy. In fact he's going to be apoplectic.

I sell on ebay too when I can face it, and hate bidders not paying for no reason but thought I would give him the chance to cancel it before the end (in about 7 hours) as then he won't have the hassle of trying to reclaim his fees.

Obviously it's my silly fault for bidding but I'm not about to pay that much for something that's very commonplace and recent. It would be ridiculous. And I think it's in the wrong category, but anyway.

What would you do?

Did he describe it as Antique or new but aged ?

If the latter I would contact eBay

It's described as 'antique/vintage original' [item] in the title.

I mean it may well be original for all I know but they are available at at least one site, brand new, exactly the same design and so on.

It was the other feedback that made me sit up iyswim, and the fact I checked and it's been listed about 7 times in the last few months with no bids...and a lot of similar ones have sold for far less, because, basically, there's nothing unusual or antique about them.

I just know he's going to kick up a fuss - he's replied to the very calm feedbacks left by others with capital letters and 'band from my auctions' type stuff Hmm

which makes me not want to enter into anything with him full stop - I don't mind taking the rap for non paying bidder etc, but I don't want to be the bad guy. So if I'm wrong then maybe I ought to go ahead and pay for it.

But it hasn't ended yet.

just don't pay for it? If the seller won't respond or cancel your bid then just take a non paying strike. Not going to affect your account having just one strike. He can't leave you bad feedback anyway.

If less than an hour ago fill in this - or you could contact live chat and ask if they can cancel for you.

Oh thankyou Lily, I know you know your stuff so am grateful - that's what I was going to do, unfortunately I bid a few days ago and wasn't aware of the other feedback or issues with the item till a couple of hours ago.

So I can't retract or I would.
He will probably make me sweat for a bit, so I win it, then demand payment, and I'll respond to the NPB dispute just so that I can explain my reasons and leave feedback. I want him to get his fees back etc. I just don't want the blardy thing.

It's £40 and the new ones are £25.

And if he wants good feedback he had better be nice! Smile I don't think I'll bother leaving any otherwise as technically it was my mistake for bidding.

Hooray - he's cancelled the bid - not got the inevitable stroppy message yet, but I am waiting.

Thanks again for all the help.

if an unpaid item case is closed feedback is removed anyway

glad he cancelled your bid - easiest all round.

Rooners · 12/01/2014 15:56

Yes. I will be more careful in future.

I don't think it is your fault - at best the auction sounded ambiguous if not misleading.
