Guy in next town selling a sofa on ebay, no interest, mainly as i live in the arse end of knowhere, and hes put courier delivery as £189!

If i bid and won, am i allowed to refuse his daft courier charge and just collect myself?

Message him first and ask ..

TippiShagpile · 08/12/2013 17:04

Hmmm, you could buy a new sofa (free delivery) for about £189. And it's not even sale time .

OhBabyLilyMunster · 08/12/2013 17:05

Exactly! It would cost a me tenner for a man with van to collect. Ive messaged the guy but no response as yet.

he probably won't - not to mention his hefty profit, he will have no seller protection if you arrange courier, plus he will still have to pack it and wait for the courier. If your guy can take cash then maybe, but if I was accepting paypal as a seller would never allow buyer to arrange their own courier.

SarahPercyAndBill · 08/12/2013 17:19

Eh? Lots of reputable antique dealers suggest arranging for own courier (that way they have proof but aren't responsible if courier doesn't deliver or delivers damaged.) There's companies that specialise in it. But they don't charge a tenner.

SandyDilbert · 08/12/2013 17:26

well they are responsible if they accept paypal. Maybe the dealers are wrong. If I sell an item, you pay by paypal and send your own courier, not only do I not have tracking to prove delivery, I have no protection if item is damaged. You claim damaged item, get full refund plus can claim for the loss with the courier as you have the contract with them. Me the seller just ends up with no money and a broken item.

Anyway, what would I know.

OhBabyLilyMunster · 08/12/2013 18:26

Well the guy wont respond now haha! Cheeky bugger.

nope - can't say am surprised really! Shop elsewhere with a decent seller is my advice.

Idespair · 08/12/2013 18:38

Don't even consider buying this.
He's put this delivery charge to avoid paying the listing fee for a higher starting price and also to avoid final value fees. He is unscrupulous and no it's unlikely he will allow you to pick it up yourself because he wants the £189. Very bad idea to get involved. If you want a cheap sofa, go to ikea.

SandyDilbert · 08/12/2013 18:45

well he isn't avoiding final fees as they are charged on postage now, but he will prob have saved on the listing fee by weighting the postage so high.

OhBabyLilyMunster · 08/12/2013 22:15

Didnt bother in the end - too fishy! Thanks for advice all :)
