I had an item for sale buy it now on best offer , someone have bought it so far all good, the buyer though has no feedback and apparenetly a very common name the paypal payment has been made via credit card dont know if this makes a difference ? its an expensive (ish) item and I am really relying on the money and cant afford to lose it, I have read some horror stories involving the type of item I am selling so am vey wary its brand new aswell so if seller buys and claims its broke etc I will lose out . Please be honest am I being ott or should I cancel ?

I am a bit confused - so hopefully someone else will be along shortly!

However, if you have 'a bad feeling' it might be better to just cancel it (if you can).

Annianni · 02/12/2013 23:26

You could put security marks on the item before sending it. Make sure you photograph the marks too.

Route666 · 02/12/2013 23:29

Great idea Annianni but that would involve opening the items packaging. completely forgot to mention I did some google mapping and the address appears to be a guest house/b&b . I admit I am most likely being paranoid but feel uneasy about it .

Just recieved this email from paypal

You have received a Pending credit card payment. However,
to reduce credit card processing costs for accounts that do
not pay fees, the ability to receive credit card payments is
limited to Premier and Business accounts.
If you upgrade to a Premier or Business account, all your
Pending credit card payments will be completed. With your
upgraded account, you will receive a range of premium
features, including the ability to accept unlimited credit card
payments. You must pay fees for accepting money with a
Premier or Business account. The fees on incoming payments
are low - just 3.4% + 0.20 GBP to receive payments. For more
details, go to:

outside
If you would like to keep your Personal account, you may log
in and refuse this payment. Personal accounts may still accept
payments funded with a bank account or PayPal balance at
no charge.

I don't ever click on any emails I get from paypal or say they are from paypal. if I want to check my account I go directly to paypal site. dont think it makes a difference the payment is from a card unless the card is maybe stolen? I would be wary about the address being a BB - you could call them and ask if the name of the person buying the item stays there. I have cancelled a few sales if I think there is something dodgy about the deal but ive never had to rely on the money from a sale.

Route666 · 03/12/2013 00:08

Thanks peggyundercrackers might try phone the b&b tommorow his name is John smith. I am more concerned about him getting refund via credit card after recieving the item, I need the money but not completely desperate and dont know if this is worth risking, how do you cancel a sale after they have paid?

Hi I am not sure what it is but from what you are saying it sounds odd to me and I would cancel the transaction specially if it is for a fair amount. I am not sure how it works with credit cards as I don't have one but I think the payment can be recalled somehow. Also, apologies to any John Smiths out there, but in this case, that is name that raises alarm. It is such a common name that conmen tend to use it as it would be difficult to trace them from name alone if that makes sense. Combined with the fact of 0 feedback and the strange address I would not risk it.

SavoyCabbage · 03/12/2013 01:22

Just cancel it. Ethically it's not the right thing to do but it's just not worth the risk.

MillyRules · 03/12/2013 01:33

John Smith paying by credit card and not pay pal would be a no go for me Im afraid. I only use pay pal.

Route666 · 03/12/2013 09:21

Thanks for the replies it could be completely innocent but I cant risk it now how to cancel ?

paying by credit card doesn't have to be sinister.

You log into paypal and click on the payment, scroll down and hit refund

then from my ebay go to the resolution centre and send a cancellation request. Also add the buyer to your blocked bidder list so when you relist he can't bid again. You can also tighten up your settings to stop certain buyers bidding too.

Route666 · 03/12/2013 09:53

Thanks SandyDilbert just done it , credit card alone wouldnt wory me its rest together that i am wary of.

would i be proteted if i sent the item and the buyer returned a different item just for future reference?

OP posts:
SandyDilbert · 03/12/2013 09:57

no not by ebay - you wouldn't be protected at all if they returned a different item. You would only be able to report to the police and pursue the buyer via small claims.

Route666 · 03/12/2013 10:02

Thanks again SandyDilbert thought so , think I will stick to selling cheaper things on ebay or atleast only to buyers with more than certain amount of feedback.

there area lot of scame going on on ebay now. i tend to use it very little now. for more expensive things i prefer people to come round with money or deliver it if they are nearby.

Gatekeeper · 03/12/2013 12:57

you have a personal paypal account which means that you can only accept funded payments from people who already HAVE money waiting in their paypal account.

If you were to opt for a business paypal account as i have you can accept any type of paypal payments whether from a balance or drawn from their bank account or credit card BUT you have a fee taken off the payment

The buyer has paid with his paypal account linked to his credit card and as such you are literally unable to accept this as payment

lljkk · 03/12/2013 20:04

I thought funds funded by credit card just became e-cheques?

Is it a phone or laptop? Those are the Ebay horror stories.
