Buyer has won a collection only item...but

She now says she won't pay until she can find a courier who will collect cheaply.

I'm cross because I feel she should have checked the courier price prior to bidding. She has also implied that it's partly my fault because she has found one courier who can collect on Friday but that wasn't one of the days/times I've given her ( I've said any evening and 2 days 9 til 1 so plenty of time!)

The other issue is that it's breakable so I'm going to have to pay to bubble wrap etc..which I wouldn't have needed to do if someone had collected in their car.

It's been 24 hours since the auction ended. What would you do? She has lots of good feedback.

Thanks!

I've had this before and I just say that I'm not prepared to pack it ,if I wanted to post stuff I would advertise it as such ,if it says collection it means collection unless she contacted you before she bid and you agreed.

RevelsRoulette · 18/11/2013 18:47

Can you do that non paying bidder thing if she doesn't pay within a certain time?

TrueBoo · 18/11/2013 18:50

Wholeheartedly agree with FloralNomad. Especially as you, the seller, are liable for the safe arrival of the item. If the courier breaks it - despite the fact she hired the courier - she could still claim her cash back from you.

Say no - either she collects, or you relist and mark her down as a non-paying buyer.

Be tough!

RosieLig · 18/11/2013 18:51

I advertised it BNIB which it is but without bubble wrap and protective packaging and it's a huge big bloody mirror so I'd need to repackage for a courier. Do you think I can still argue about the packaging seeing as I've advertised it BNIB?

Thanks!

laughingeyes2013 · 18/11/2013 18:52

You advertised collection only. She bud under those terms. She can't force your hand and especially if it's breakable, not least because you wouldn't have factored in cost of packaging.

I'd report her to eBay, who I believe will in turn allow you to re-post your item for free.

bundaberg · 18/11/2013 18:53

no way!

if you courier it then organise it yourself. otherwise if it goes missing/gets broken you will not be able to claim! esp if she doesn't pay to get it insured.

if it was collection only then you can insist it is collection only! i don't have a problem if people ASK before the auction ends if they can have items sent, but they shouldn't just assuem you'll do it.

not only will you have to buy packaging, you'll also have to either take it to a depot or wait around for someone to collect it

bundaberg · 18/11/2013 18:54

so in a nutshell, either tell her no, it's collection only. OR you find a courier you are happy to use and she can pay the price for that AND packaging

SandyDilbert · 18/11/2013 19:13

you must never ever let a buyer organise their own courier - you have no contract with the courier so cannot claim if it gets broken, nor will you have tracking, plus the hassle of waiting plus packing

cash on collection only - no exceptions ever.

RosieLig · 18/11/2013 19:22

Thanks guys- I love this place!

She has replied and I'm not sure what to do, feel quite stressed and annoyednow. Bloody ebay, she got it for a bargain too!

Her reply......

The courier is expected to provide a blanket / white glove service which means they are responsible for the transit, wrapping/packaging. I never asked you to do this for me!

I still want the mirror but I need to know if you will give me the time necessary to sort out this collection within your strict timeframe. The eBay auction only ended yesterday!

If you don't want to give me the opportunity to arrange for collection I am sure eBay will understand.
It is not usual practice to commit to a courier without having purchased the item!

Obviously, I will be very disappointed but will have to accept your decision if you wish to withdraw from the sale by mutual agreement.

There is a chance that I could drive up to you one weekend before Christmas. Can you confirm that you will hold on to it for me if so I can pay you in cash on collection.

God, she's a sarky cow, isn't she?

I think I'd be replying "I was very clear in the listing that this item was collection only. Not courier. I am unwilling to 'hold onto it' on the offchance you might happen to come up. Since you are unable to pay and to collect in a timely fashion, I think it is best to cancel this transaction."

She needs knocking off her high horse. Don't want to give her the opportunity blah blah not usual practice yadda yadda.

trying to make herself the victim of a Very Unreasonable Seller.

SandyDilbert · 18/11/2013 21:33

dear buyer

I am sorry but I cannot let you arrange your own courier - if you do then I lose all seller protection as specified by eBay. Unless you are able to collect and pay in cash I am unable to proceed with the sale by xx date.

IAlwaysThought · 18/11/2013 22:34

What sandy said. She is a snarky buyer Confused

Please someone correct me if I am wrong but is it best to try for a mutual cancellation so that you don't loose your fees AND so that she can't leave feed back.
DISCLAIMER - I might be wrong about this Confused

bundaberg · 18/11/2013 22:49

totally agree, she is trying to make out that because the courier is collecting it from you it's the same thing. it really isn't!

i would definitely reply back saying that the auction clearly stated it was collection only and that courier is NOT the same thing and is unacceptable.

and yes, mutual cancellation necessary.

SandyDilbert · 18/11/2013 23:02

no the buyer can still leave feedback if you go ahead with a cancellation - non payer case is the best, but you risk her making payment by paypal if you open a case.

RosieLig · 18/11/2013 23:06

If she leaves me feedback can I do the same? It'll hurt her more than me as I'm only an occasional user.

OP posts:
bundaberg · 18/11/2013 23:08

no, unfortuantely you can't leave feedback. it's bloody stupid

RosieLig · 18/11/2013 23:18

What do you think is best to do- open non payment or cancel mutually? Thanks again for all your help.

OP posts:
SandyDilbert · 19/11/2013 09:39

difficult - up to you really. To preserve feedback non payer is the only way, but she could just pay by paypal and then leave a neg if she wants to be awkward. The kindest is cancellation, but buyer can refuse that, you won't get your fees back and of course again she can leave bad feedback.

HoneyDragon · 19/11/2013 09:43

She knows she has got. Bargain as its collection only.

If you'd wrapped it and added a courier with insurance before selling you'd have got a lot more.

Plus, if its damaged or she doesn't like it you are lumbered with all the claim costs from her.

YoucancallmeQueenBee · 19/11/2013 09:47

Definitely don't do the courier thing. Cancel the transaction. I've had this a few times & it really, really annoys me. I write in huge letters "pick up only, no couriers" & still they try it on. GRRRRRRRR!

I've never had negative feedback left though from the cancelled transaction.

GhostsInSnow · 19/11/2013 09:52

I believe the wording for collection is 'Collection in Person' she wont be collecting 'in person' therefore has not complied with the auction at all.
TBH though I didn't think couriers took mirrors anyway.

Stick to the script "sorry, collection in person, by you only, no couriers." If she does neg you call eBay (dont email call them!) and have a moan, you might find they remove it.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 19/11/2013 09:57

Mutually cancel the transaction. My parents allowed a buyer to send a courier and then had loads of grief as buyer said it was damaged when she got it. My parents gave her a partial refund and found the item promptly placed back on eBay for more money.

I always put in my listings "collection in person only please do not bid if you cannot collect yourself".

GhostsInSnow · 19/11/2013 10:05

Yep, as I thought when you list something for collection only it does actually state in the postage bit 'collection in person'

auction pic

So really she has no get out.

bundaberg · 19/11/2013 10:16

go on the livechat thing on ebay... they should be able to tell you the best course of action.
