I've sold a few things over the last few weeks and just checked my latest invoice. I don't do it very often so was a bit surprised to see the extra fees for postal charges. I do have a vague memory of people talking about it here but it hasn't really registered.

What a con!!

Most of my items are listed with a fixed price so is there any reason why I shouldn't just increase my fixed price amount to include p&p then put free p&p in the listing?

no reason not to, every reason to do things that way. Still check similar items to try to keep your stuff competitive.

Yes bit of a shock :(

While ther's have been saying they'll be leaving eBay, I've been quite happy to carry on but this feels like the push I need to bugger off, too Sad.

The only problem is, I don't know where else I can sell my crap treasure Grin!!

My local FB selling pages are filled with things at really low prices and I'd be better off sticking with eBay (even after the ridiculous fees).

I'll have a look at Gumtree. I've only tried selling pushchairs on there in the past (unsuccessfully).

yeah gumtree is pretty sleepy here, too. You could check Freeads or local free newspaper thru the door ads. I've bought a few things on Ebid. Check if it's worthwhile to sell on Amazon, too.

I got caught out with the new charges, too, with my last batch of sales. I remembered to adjust my domestic postal prices, but completely forgot about the overseas ones. So, of course, I had two overseas sales and I only realised when the items had bids so I couldn't change them. Doh!

I was away last week so am restarting selling in earnest, trying to make a dent in the clutter before Christmas. I have some stuff that I want to advertise locally - I will try Gumtree but I was also looking at selling on Facebook. My local FB selling group is a closed one - I have now clicked the "Join Group" button a couple of times but have not heard anything. Should I contact one of the moderators directly?

Mumelie · 21/10/2013 11:30

Oh bum - I've only just noticed that on my invoice too! I try to keep my p&p competative - literally only covering the cost of the bag and postage - now I'll have to put it up - which will make it seem like I'm trying to make money on postage! Arrrggghhh.

SandyDilbert · 21/10/2013 11:56

It may be worth offering free p&p now - makes no odd to fvf now plus protects your star rating. Just for free listing weekends though, or listing fees could be higher.

lisbapalea · 21/10/2013 12:59

HI all,

Sorry for hijacking,, but.....

I am a bit of a tentative ebayer having only dabbled in the past but have amassed a huge pile of stuff which I need to flog - what is it I need to be aware of now? Do I take it they are taking more fees for P&P as well as sale price?

Also, does anyone know if there are any no fees weekends coming up?

Thanks!

CarmonEileen · 21/10/2013 13:52

Does anybody know the answer to this?

If I sell something for £25 + £5 p&p and buyer asks to collect how do you not get charged for the total regarding fvf? I don't see anyway around it.

Sorry for the hijack OP. Grin

PurpleFrog · 21/10/2013 14:09

I think you just have to send them a new invoice without the P&P.

CarmonEileen · 21/10/2013 14:10

PurpleFrog Thanks for replying, so you can send a revised invoice if someone is collecting and ebay will use that as the one as the one to charge?

PurpleFrog · 21/10/2013 14:15

Yes. They can't take the fees anyway until it has been marked as paid by you.

CarmonEileen · 21/10/2013 15:05

Super. Thanks PurpleFrogSmile

lljkk · 21/10/2013 19:16

@ lisbapalea

yes, for non-business sellers Ebay now takes 10% of p+p as well as 10% of sale price.

PatoBanton · 21/10/2013 19:22

Just when it seemed like there was nothing else ebay could charge us for.

It'll be breathing while listing next.

I'm out - I don't know where they get off, I really don't.

lljkk · 21/10/2013 19:45

I wouldn't mind so much if they had lowered the flat fee to say 7 or 8%. Then it would discourage postage gouging without making it seem like Ebay was gouging sellers. Some sellers are now reporting that like 40%+ of their bill is for p+p fees (ouch).

If you think that's bad I could tell you about the joys of Cassini or performance ratings. But maybe ignorance is bliss.

sarahtigh · 22/10/2013 16:19

it is 10% of total whether sale of £5 with £10 postage or sale of £15 with free P&P all end up with fees of £1.50 however if buyer collects just send invoice without postage and tick payment made so then just 10% of sale and as cash no paypal fees

it is what postage option buyer chooses so if they pay more for 1st class/ international postage you pay more fees

makes low value but heavy/ bulky items rather tricky to sell

however generally stuff sells for much less elsewhere so you have to weigh that in with reduced costs

most real auctions charge 18-20% plus VAT (so in reality 21-24%)for selling things with a minimum fee of £3-5
